Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Penthouse

The private penthouse suite at the top of the Vance Tower was bathed in the crimson glow of the city skyline at dusk. The sprawling, high-ceilinged room was completely silent, save for the crackling of a modern bio-ethanol fireplace. Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a crystal glass half-filled with amber liquor. Her ivory pantsuit was rumpled, her hair slightly disheveled, and her manicured nails dug deep into the rim of the glass.
The heavy mahogany double doors at the private elevator landing chimed softly.
Clara didn't turn around. She stared at her own reflection in the massive glass pane, watching the tiny red blinking lights of distant helicopters hovering outside. "I told you to wait downstairs, Victoria. I don't want to see anyone right now."
The footsteps that entered the penthouse were heavy, deliberate, and entirely unhurried. They didn't belong to Victoria.
Clara froze. She slowly turned around, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she saw the tall, imposing figure stepping out of the shadows near the grand piano. It wasn't Julian. It was a man she hadn't seen in over a decade—a man whose face had been scrubbed from every corporate registry and family portrait in the city.
"Hello, Clara," the man said, his voice deep, raspy, and chillingly familiar. "Did you really think you could bury the past just by buying off the board?"
Clara dropped her crystal glass. It shattered against the polished hardwood floor, splashing amber liquid across her designer shoes. She stumbled back against the glass window, her breath catching in her throat. "That's impossible... You're dead. My father said your plane went down over the Atlantic twenty years ago."
The man stepped closer into the firelight, revealing a face lined with age but bearing the exact same piercing dark eyes and sharp jawline as Julian. A jagged scar ran down the side of his neck—the exact twin of the scars worn by Julian and Elena.
"Your father lied about a great many things, Clara," the man replied calmly, pulling a heavy leather-bound ledger from beneath his trench coat and tossing it onto the glass coffee table. "He stole this company from its rightful founders. And tonight, the audit is complete."
Clara stared at the ledger, trembling from head to toe. Before she could muster the voice to scream for security, the penthouse smart-screen on the wall flickered to life automatically. The screen displayed a live feed from the private tarmac downstairs, showing Julian and Elena boarding the private jet, while federal marshals stood by, securing the perimeter.
Victoria burst out from the hallway service door, breathless and frantic. "Miss Clara! The accounts—they’re completely frozen! We’ve been locked out of the mainframe by an override code issued under the primary founder's direct lineage!"

Clara slowly turned her head back to look at the older man standing in the center of the room. A cold, terrifying realization washed over her face. "Lineage..." she whispered. "Elena... Elena isn't just a maid."
