Chapter 13 - The Descent into the Vault

The blaring red strobe lights cast frantic shadows across the damp concrete walls of the transit terminal's sub-level. The computerized lockdown voice continued to echo overhead, counting down the seconds until the heavy steel blast doors sealed off the sector permanently. Julian kept a firm grip on Elena’s hand, pulling her swiftly toward the recessed iron maintenance door at the end of the corridor.
"Only twenty seconds before the automatic blast doors drop," the chauffeur called out from the vehicle, tapping furiously on his remote tablet. "I'm overriding the electronic locks from here, but you have to move now!"
With a sharp mechanical clunk, the iron maintenance door popped open a few inches, releasing a gust of cool, stale air from the tunnels below. Julian pushed it wide, ushering Elena inside just as the massive overhead steel barrier began to descend with a thunderous crash, missing them by mere inches.
Pitch blackness enveloped them for a fraction of a second before Julian flicked on a heavy-duty tactical flashlight. The beam cut through the dust-filled air, revealing a narrow, spiraling stone staircase leading deep into the earth.
"Is this the way to the federal vault?" Elena asked, her voice echoing softly off the ancient stone walls as they descended step by step.
"Not quite," Julian replied, his boots crunching steadily on the gravel stairs. "This is the original drainage and service tunnel built during the 1920s expansion. It bypasses the entire federal security grid. Clara’s lawyers locked down the digital interface at the main entrance, but they didn't account for analog architecture."
Elena looked down at her blue maid uniform, now slightly damp from the rain, and touched the silver key hanging securely around her neck. "My grandfather... is he waiting for us at the bottom?"
Julian glanced back at her, his expression softening slightly in the beam of the flashlight. "He’s waiting at the inner sanctuary. The room where your mother hid the master ledgers before she was forced into hiding. Once we reach the vault mirror, your biometric signature will unlock the global asset freeze permanently."
As they reached the bottom of the spiral staircase, the tunnel opened up into a vast, subterranean chamber carved directly out of the bedrock. In the center of the room stood a massive, ornate decorative wall mirror with an ornate gold frame—an exact replica of the one in the grand hotel hallway where this entire nightmare had begun.
Suddenly, the silence of the underground chamber was shattered by the sharp clack of footsteps echoing down the stone stairs behind them. Both Julian and Elena spun around. Standing at the top of the staircase, silhouetted against the red emergency light, was Clara. Her red satin dress was torn, her hair wild, and her face twisted in a mask of absolute, unhinged fury.

"Did you really think you could hide down here in the dark?" Clara screamed, her voice bouncing off the stone walls as she pulled a heavy iron lever mounted on the wall. "If I can't have the empire, nobody can!"
