Chapter 14 - Shattered Glass

The heavy iron lever groaned against the stone wall as Clara pulled it down with all her might. A deafening mechanical grinding sound reverberated through the subterranean chamber, shaking dust and loose mortar from the ancient ceiling. Across the room, heavy steel bolts slammed shut around the perimeter doors, sealing every exit from the underground sanctuary.
Clara stood at the top of the spiral staircase, her chest heaving beneath her torn red satin dress, a manic smile twisting her features. "You're trapped!" she shrieked, her voice echoing wildly off the damp bedrock. "There is no escape this time, Julian! I programmed the facility's self-destruction protocol. In three minutes, this entire vault—and every piece of evidence inside it—will be reduced to rubble!"
Julian didn't flinch. His dark eyes remained locked onto Clara with terrifying calm. He didn't waste a single breath shouting back at her. Instead, he turned his full attention toward the massive decorative wall mirror standing against the far stone wall.
"Elena," Julian said urgently, grabbing her shoulders and turning her to face the ornate gold frame. "The biometric scanner isn't digital. It's behind the glass. Press your hand against the lower right corner where the Vance family crest is etched."
Elena didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, pressing her bare palm firmly against the cold glass mirror. Nothing happened for a agonizingly long second. The digital timer on the wall flashed red, ticking down: 01:45... 01:44...
Clara laughed hysterically from the staircase, pulling a small silver remote from her pocket. "It won't work! The system has been purged! You're going down with me!"
Suddenly, a bright blue laser scanned the surface of the glass beneath Elena’s palm, reading the unique scar tissue and biometric markers encoded in her DNA. A soft chime echoed through the chamber, followed by a loud, pneumatic hiss as the massive gold-framed mirror slowly slid forward on hidden hydraulic tracks, revealing a brightly lit inner sanctum containing the original master ledgers and federal asset recovery keys.
Julian grabbed the heavy encrypted briefcase from Elena, slamming it onto the terminal inside the hidden alcove and inputting the final master code with lightning speed. The red countdown timer abruptly flashed green, freezing at 00:12.
A computerized voice announced: Global asset transfer authorized. Vance-Moretti merger permanently dissolved. Restitution protocol active.
Clara’s manic smile vanished instantly. Her jaw dropped in sheer horror as her phone buzzed violently with notifications of immediate corporate liquidation and federal arrest warrants. She stumbled backward on the stairs, her breath catching in her throat.

Before Clara could turn and run up the staircase, heavy footsteps echoed from the upper landing, and three federal marshals in tactical gear emerged from the shadows, blocking her path and placing cold steel cuffs around her wrists.
