Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Marble

The silence that followed Clara’s departure hung heavy in the opulent hallway, broken only by the faint, rhythmic dripping of a distant fountain. Julian remained kneeling on the cold marble floor for a long moment, his large hand still resting firmly on Elena’s trembling shoulder. The ornate gold frame of the wall mirror caught the harsh glare of the overhead chandeliers, casting long, distorted shadows across their faces. Elena stared down at him, her dark eyes wide with a mixture of terror and lingering disbelief, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

"Julian, you shouldn't have done that," Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she clutched her blue maid uniform tighter around her waist. "Clara is dangerous. You know what her family is capable of. If she suspects anything—if she finds out about us—she will tear everything we built down to ash."

Julian slowly rose to his feet, towering over her with an imposing yet protective aura. The intricate tattoos on his neck seemed to shift under the amber light as he jaw tightened into a hard line. He reached out, gently brushing a tear from her flushed cheek with a tenderness that completely contradicted his ruthless reputation in the corporate world.

"Let her try," Julian replied, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that echoed off the polished white panels. "Clara thinks she owns this empire just because her father signed over the shares. She forgets who actually built the foundation. I didn't spend five years playing the dutiful fiancé just to watch her torment the only person I’ve ever truly loved."

Elena stepped back, her gaze dropping to the identical jagged scars visible beneath their collars—a silent testament to a binding oath forged years ago in blood and secrecy. "We are playing a dangerous game, Julian. The board meeting is tomorrow morning. If Clara presents the merger documents to the board, your entire majority stake will be locked behind her marital asset clause."

Julian stepped closer, capturing her hands in his calloused palms. "The merger won't happen. Because tomorrow morning, before Clara even steps into the boardroom, the real owner of this company is going to file a restraining order—and a petition for total asset freezing."

Before Elena could process the weight of his words, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the far end of the hallway. Both of them froze instantly. Elena’s eyes darted toward the shadows near the service elevator. Slowly, a figure stepped out from the darkness, holding a small, glowing smartphone with the video recording light blinking in the quiet air. It was Clara’s personal assistant, smirking maliciously as she lowered the phone.
