Chapter 7 - Ashes of the Past

The tearing sound of ancient parchment echoed like a gunshot through the damp archive vault. Elena gasped, frozen in horror as the two halves of her mother's founding charter fluttered down onto the dusty concrete floor like dead leaves. Clara stood over the torn paper, her diamond earrings swinging with her triumphant head toss, a cruel smile stretching across her lips.
"Did you really think a piece of paper from thirty years ago could overturn a legally binding corporate acquisition?" Clara mocked, her voice sharp and ringing with absolute confidence. "My father wiped your mother's name off the registry before you were even old enough to walk. You are nobody, Elena. A servant. Nothing more."
Julian stepped forward, shielding Elena with his broad shoulders. His face was a mask of cold fury, the intricate tattoos on his neck pulsing with the tension in his veins. He didn't raise his voice, but every word he spoke dropped like heavy stones into the quiet room.
"You just destroyed the only legal proof that protected your family from total forfeiture," Julian said softly, his eyes locked onto Clara’s triumphant gaze.
Clara’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"
"That charter wasn't just a historical document, Clara," Julian replied, pulling a sleek, encrypted data drive from his pocket. "It was the master key to the digital vault. Every fraudulent asset transfer your father made in 1998 was cryptographically linked to the original signature on that exact piece of parchment. By destroying it, you didn't destroy the evidence—you triggered the automated public release protocol."
Before Clara could process the warning, a shrill, synchronized chorus of alert notifications erupted simultaneously. Clara’s diamond-studded smartphone, which she held tightly in her hand, began vibrating violently, flashing red warning banners across the screen. She pulled it up, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she read the incoming global media alerts.
"No... no, this is impossible!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as she stared at the flashing headlines announcing the immediate freeze of all Moretti assets worldwide.
Julian ignored her panic. He grabbed Elena’s hand, pulling her back toward the open service tunnel. "Come on, Elena. We have to move before building security locks down the sub-basement."

Elena cast one last look back at Clara, who had dropped to her knees on the concrete floor, clutching her head as her corporate empire crumbled around her. Just as Julian pulled Elena into the dark brick tunnel, the heavy archive doors slammed open behind them, and a squad of armed private guards rushed into the room, shouting orders.
