Chapter 10 - The Secret Heir

The private jet climbed steadily through the thick layer of grey clouds, leaving the glittering lights of the metropolis far below. Inside the luxurious cabin, the soft amber reading lights cast a warm glow across the mahogany table. Elena sat by the window, staring out at the endless expanse of stars, her mind racing with the weight of everything that had transpired. The small, jagged scar beneath her collarbone seemed to burn with a dull, persistent heat.
Julian sat across from her, holding a heavy glass of sparkling water. He hadn't touched it; his intense gaze remained fixed on Elena, watching every micro-expression on her face.
"You've been quiet since we cleared airspace," Julian said softly, breaking the steady hum of the jet engines.
Elena turned her head slowly, meeting his dark, unwavering eyes. "My father... the man who raised me in that small coastal town... he always told me my mother died in a hospital fire when I was an infant. He gave me this pendant, told me it was all she left behind." She reached into her pocket, pulling out a silver chain with a small, intricately carved key. "He never mentioned the Vance empire. He never mentioned that I had a grandfather who survived."
Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Your grandfather was betrayed, Elena. When the Moretti family staged the hostile takeover thirty years ago, they didn't just steal the corporate shares—they engineered a systematic erasure of your family line. They thought if they kept you hidden in plain sight, working as a maid in our own hotels, you would never discover the truth."
Elena’s hands trembled slightly as she held the silver key. "And you, Julian? Where do you fit into all of this? Your scars... your connection to the vault... you’ve known the truth from the very beginning, haven't you?"
Julian didn't look away. He reached up, slowly loosening the collar of his crisp white shirt, revealing the full extent of the jagged scar across his chest, matching the one she carried.
"I was raised to be the corporate enforcer, Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping into a somber, reflective register. "Clara’s father groomed me to protect their monopoly. But three years ago, when I first saw you standing in the grand hallway of the flagship hotel... when I saw that scar while you were cleaning the mirrors... I ran the DNA records through a private medical database."
He reached out, covering her trembling hands with his warm palms. "I didn't get engaged to Clara out of love, Elena. I did it to infiltrate their inner circle, access their encrypted ledgers, and bide my time until you were legally old enough to claim your inheritance."
Before Elena could fully absorb the staggering depth of his devotion, the secure satellite phone on the cabin desk buzzed sharply. Julian picked it up, listening to the brief, encrypted voice message from the grandfather waiting on the ground. His expression hardened instantly.
"What is it?" Elena asked, sensing the sudden shift in the air.

Julian lowered the phone slowly, his eyes locked onto hers. "Clara’s father just filed an emergency injunction using a forged emergency clause. They’re attempting to seize the federal vault before we land."
