Chapter 12 - Collision Course

Sparks flew as the armored car scraped violently against the concrete highway barrier, the screech of metal tearing through the stormy night air. Inside the cabin, the emergency lights flickered, casting a frantic red glow over the interior. The chauffeur fought the steering wheel with absolute concentration, keeping the heavy vehicle balanced as another black SUV rammed their side door.

"They're trying to run us off the overpass!" the chauffeur shouted over the roar of the engine and the pelting rain.

Julian didn't panic. His face remained chillingly calm as he unclipped a secure comms unit from the dashboard. "Hold your lane. Don't let them pit us." He turned to Elena, his hand firmly gripping her shoulder. "Stay down. No matter what happens."

Elena nodded, her heart pounding against her ribs, but her eyes remained steady. She reached down, picking up a heavy steel encrypted briefcase from the floorboard, holding it tightly against her chest like a shield.

With a calculated move, the chauffeur suddenly slammed on the brakes. The pursuing SUV, unable to react in time, shot past them at terrifying speed, crashing hard into the highway guardrail and sending a shower of orange sparks into the dark sky. But before they could draw a breath, two more vehicles swarmed in to take its place, boxing them in from all sides.

"We're not going to make it to the main courthouse entrance," the chauffeur warned, glancing at the navigation screen. "They've set up a full road blockade at the downtown off-ramp."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. He looked out the window at the looming concrete structure of the city's old transit terminal running parallel to the highway. "Take the maintenance exit. Drop us at the sub-level utility service bay."

The chauffeur didn't hesitate. He jerked the steering wheel hard to the right, plunging the armored car down a steep, descending concrete ramp that led directly beneath the transit station, leaving the pursuing SUVs screeching to a halt behind them.

The car skidded to a halt in the dim, echoing sub-level garage. Julian pushed the door open instantly, pulling Elena out into the damp, cold air. The sound of dripping water echoed through the cavernous space.

"This way," Julian said, leading her toward a heavy iron maintenance door marked with faded lettering.

As they reached the door, the security alarm suddenly shrieked to life overhead. Red strobe lights flashed across the concrete walls, and a computerized voice announced: Facility lockdown initiated. Unauthorized personnel detected in sector four.
