Chapter 6 - The Velvet Cage

The heavy oak door creaked open, flooding the dim archive aisle with blinding fluorescent light. Clara stood in the doorway, her ivory pantsuit immaculate, her expression a mask of pure, predatory triumph. She held a heavy brass paperweight in one hand, tapping it rhythmically against her palm as she scanned the shadowed rows of bookshelves.

"Come out, little maid," Clara called out, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. "Hiding in the dark won't change the fact that the locks have been changed, and the security codes have been wiped. You are trapped inside my building."

In the deep shadows behind the massive ledger stacks, Julian pressed a finger to his lips, signaling Elena to remain completely silent. His dark eyes darted around the confined space, searching for an alternative exit. The only way out led directly through the main aisle where Clara stood blocking the path. Slowly, silently, Julian slid his hand down to grip the heavy brass handle of a hidden service panel built into the wall behind the shelves.

"I know you're in there, Julian," Clara continued, her footsteps drawing closer, the click of her heels growing uncomfortably loud. "Did you really think you could outsmart me with a forged federal warrant? My father's lawyers had it thrown out before you even finished your little speech in the boardroom."

Julian didn't answer. With a sharp, practiced twist, he forced the hidden panel open, revealing a dark, narrow brick service tunnel that ran deep beneath the city streets. He turned to Elena, his hand gripping her wrist to pull her toward the opening.

Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the darkness, illuminating the narrow aisle. Clara stepped around the corner of the bookshelf, her eyes widening in fury as she spotted them preparing to escape.

"Stop right there!" Clara screamed, lunging forward with unexpected speed.

Julian shoved Elena gently into the tunnel, turning just in time to block Clara’s path. Clara slammed her fists against his chest, her face contorted with rage and bitter betrayal. "You're throwing away everything for a maid? After everything my family gave you?"

"Your family stole everything they have," Julian replied coldly, catching her wrists with iron strength. "And the reckoning has only just begun."

With a sudden, violent wrench, Clara managed to break free from his grip. She didn't lunge at Julian; instead, she spun around and grabbed the old yellowed parchment that had fallen from Elena’s pocket onto the dusty floor. Clara stared at the signature, and her mocking laugh echoed through the vault.

"Looking for your birthright, Elena?" Clara sneered, ripping the historical charter straight down the middle. "Too bad. It doesn't exist anymore."
