Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Archive

The heavy oak doors of the corporate archive room locked with a heavy click, sealing out the frantic chaos echoing from the executive floor above. Elena leaned against the towering mahogany bookshelves, her chest heaving as she tried to regulate her breathing. The dim, dust-motes-filled air smelled of old paper and leather bindings. Footsteps approached rapidly down the narrow aisle between the historical ledgers, and a strong hand gripped her elbow, pulling her safely into the shadows behind a stack of century-old corporate ledgers.
"Are you insane?" Julian hissed quietly, his face inches from hers in the gloom. "I told you to stay in the penthouse suite until I handled the board."
"I couldn't just sit there while you walked into a trap alone," Elena whispered back, her fingers gently tracing the edge of his crisp white shirt collar. "Clara knows about the archive. She sent her legal team down here twenty minutes ago to look for the original 1998 founding charter."
Julian’s eyes hardened. "She won't find it. The charter was moved to an off-site federal vault days ago. But that’s not why you came down here, Elena. What did you find?"
Elena swallowed hard, her hand trembling as she reached into the deep pocket of her maid uniform and pulled out a folded, yellowed piece of heavy parchment. The edges were singed with old burn marks, and the corporate seal embossed upon it bore a signature that made Julian’s breath catch in his throat.
"My mother didn't just work for the Vance family as a housekeeper, Julian," Elena whispered, tears shimmering in her dark eyes. "Look at the secondary signatory on this document. Read the name."
Julian leaned closer, squinting in the faint amber light filtering through the high basement window. The signature was written in elegant, sloping cursive: Elena Vance, Sr.
Before Julian could process the staggering revelation that Elena was not a subordinate, but a rightful blood heir to the Vance empire, a metallic scraping sound echoed from the heavy oak door. The handle began to turn slowly from the outside, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of Clara’s high heels clicking against the concrete floor.

"I know you're hiding down here, little maid," Clara’s voice rang out, cold and venomous, bouncing off the stone walls. "And I know you brought the key."
