Chapter 9 - The Wine Cellar's Secret

The descent into the estate's subterranean wine cellar was cold and damp, the air growing noticeably heavier with every step down the stone stairs. Detective Miller led the way, flashlight in hand, while the second officer escorted Julian and Margaret down the narrow stone passageway. Evelyn walked ahead of them all, moving with an eerie familiarity through the shadows of the house she had mapped out during her three years of silent captivity.

The wine cellar was vast, lined with towering wooden racks holding hundreds of dust-covered vintage bottles. But Evelyn walked past the expensive wines, stopping at the far corner of the cellar where a massive stone pillar supported the weight of the grand mansion above.

"Here," Evelyn said, stopping before the pillar.

Detective Miller shined his flashlight beam against the rough stone surface. At first glance, it appeared to be a standard structural support built when the estate was constructed a century ago. But upon closer inspection, the mortar around the base of the pillar was noticeably newer than the surrounding stonework—a clumsy patch job hidden behind a wooden wine rack.

"Move the rack," Detective Miller ordered.

The two officers stepped forward, grabbing the heavy wooden wine rack and sliding it across the stone floor with a loud, scraping screech. Behind it was a low, iron-reinforced wooden door set directly into the stone foundation, secured by a heavy padlock covered in rust.

Margaret tried to pull away from the officer holding her cuffs, her voice rising in frantic desperation. "No! You can't open that! Leave it alone!"

Detective Miller drew a heavy pair of bolt cutters from his tactical belt. With a swift, practiced motion, he clamped the jaws around the rusted padlock and squeezed. The hardened steel snapped with a sharp clack.

The heavy iron door swung outward, revealing a pitch-black tunnel descending steeply into the earth beneath the estate. A wave of freezing, subterranean air rushed up from the dark, carrying an unmistakable scent of damp stone and ancient dust.

The younger officer flicked on his high-powered flashlight and swept the beam into the tunnel. The light caught the glint of metal rails running along the floor—a miniature mining cart track leading into the absolute dark.

"What is this place?" Julian asked, his voice trembling as he stared into the black abyss.

Evelyn turned to face him, the dim light casting deep shadows across her bruised face. "Your grandfather built this estate during the Prohibition era, Julian. It wasn't just a home. It was a vault. And your family didn't stop using it when Prohibition ended."

Detective Miller stepped through the threshold, leading the way into the tunnel with his service weapon drawn. "Stay here," he ordered the officers guarding Julian and Margaret.

As the detective disappeared into the dark, the minutes ticked by in absolute silence. The only sound was Margaret's ragged breathing and the distant drip of water somewhere deep within the bedrock.
