Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Dark

The grip on Julian’s wrist was iron-tight, pulling him toward the jagged edges of the broken oak planks. Panic surged through his veins, rendering him momentarily incapable of speech. The maid scrambled backward, her vacuum cleaner clattering against the antique wainscoting. Margaret stood frozen, her arrogant facade cracking instantly into sheer, unadulterated terror as she stared at the dirt-encrusted hand gripping her son.

Julian choked back a breath, his fingers curling against the splintered wood as he tried to pry the stranger's fingers away. "Who are you?" he choked out, his voice a raw rasp. "How are you alive?"

The face in the darkness shifted slightly, catching a sliver of ambient light. Matted dark hair clung to a pale, bruised forehead, and the remnants of a torn, filthy wedding dress fluttered against the damp earth below. It was undeniably Evelyn, yet stripped of all grace, reduced to a feral creature surviving in the crawlspace of her own intended home.

"You let them brick me in," Evelyn whispered, her voice carrying the agonizing weight of betrayal. "You watched them do it, Julian."

"No," Julian gasped, tears finally spilling over his lashes. "I didn't know. I swear to God, I thought you ran away!"

"Liar," Evelyn hissed, her grip tightening until Julian cried out in pain.

Margaret found her voice, stepping forward with a frantic, desperate fury. "Let go of him, you filthy parasite! You were supposed to be gone! You ruined everything for this family!"

Evelyn slowly turned her hollow gaze toward Margaret. A chilling, broken laugh echoed from the depths of the floor. "You thought a few floorboards could bury the truth, Margaret? I breathed your dust for years. I ate your crumbs. I listened to you plan my murder."

"Guards! Security!" Margaret screamed, backing away toward the grand staircase. But no one came. The staff had been given the weekend off, a deliberate precaution Margaret had orchestrated days prior.

Julian reached deeper into the gap, ignoring the sharp splinters biting into his flesh, desperate to pull Evelyn out of her subterranean prison. "Evelyn, please. Let me help you up. Let me fix this."

"It's too late to fix it, Julian," Evelyn whispered, her eyes glowing with a terrifying, vengeful resolve. She pulled him a fraction of an inch closer, her breath smelling of damp earth and old tears. "Because now that I'm out, I'm taking the whole house down with me."
