Chapter 15 - The New Horizon
The gravel crunched softly beneath their feet as Julian and Evelyn walked past the wrought-iron gates of the estate, leaving the flashing lights, the ruined mansion, and the dark history of the Vance family far behind them. The crisp autumn air filled their lungs, carrying the fresh, clean scent of the open countryside and a new beginning.
A silver state car idled quietly by the shoulder of the road. The driver stepped out, politely holding the rear door open for Evelyn. She paused before getting in, turning to look back down the long driveway one last time.
The smoke from the collapsed mansion had finally cleared, leaving behind only a quiet mound of gray ash where generations of greed, violence, and deceit had once reigned supreme. The floorboards that had hidden her away for a thousand days were gone, reduced to nothing more than memories buried beneath the earth.
Julian stood beside her, his hand gently brushing against hers. For the first time in their lives, neither of them had anything to hide. There were no hidden rooms, no stolen ledgers, and no dark secrets waiting to be uncovered in the dark.
"Where will you go?" Julian asked softly, his eyes reflecting the vast, open sky above.
"Forward," Evelyn replied simply, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. She looked at him with eyes that had seen the absolute worst of humanity, yet still held the capacity for grace. "The road is completely clear, Julian. For both of us."
Julian nodded, feeling a profound weight lift from his shoulders as he realized the truth in her words. The past could not be rewritten, but the future was entirely unwritten.
Evelyn stepped into the car, and Julian followed, sliding onto the leather seat beside her. The door closed with a quiet, solid click—not the sound of a trap or a prison cell, but the sound of a door opening onto a brand new world.
The driver slipped behind the wheel, put the car in gear, and pulled away smoothly from the gates of the ruined estate, accelerating down the long stretch of highway toward the bright horizon.
