Chapter 14 - Walking into the Light

The sun had climbed high into the autumn sky, burning away the remaining mist and casting a warm, golden light across the ruins of the Vance estate. The police tape fluttered gently in the breeze, cordoning off what remained of the grand mansion, which now resembled an excavated archaeological site rather than a home.
Julian and Evelyn stood near the edge of the property line, away from the flashing lights, the lingering reporters, and the hum of police radios. An unmarked state vehicle idled nearby, waiting to take Julian downtown for his formal statement, though Detective Miller had assured him that his cooperation and immediate assistance in uncovering the family's crimes would be taken into account by the district attorney.
"Will you wait for me?" Julian asked quietly, his hands trembling slightly as he looked down at his shoes. He had no money, no home, and no family left, stripped of every luxury he had ever taken for granted.
Evelyn turned to face him, the morning sun catching the dark hair tied back neatly from her face. The bruises on her skin were slowly fading, replaced by the natural color of a survivor stepping back into the world.
"I spent three years waiting in the dark, Julian," Evelyn said, her voice gentle yet firm. "I'm done waiting. If you want to walk with me, you have to leave the past behind right here."
Julian looked back at the smoking ruins of the mansion one last time. The house of secrets, built on stolen lives and hidden graves, was nothing more than a pile of broken wood and ash. He felt a profound sense of liberation wash over him.
"I'm ready," Julian said, his voice steady and clear.
Detective Miller walked over, holding a small manila folder containing the few personal items recovered from Julian's coat before the collapse. He handed the folder to Julian with a respectful nod.
"Your court date is set for next month, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said professionally. "Given your testimony and the evidence you helped recover, the prosecution is recommending a suspended sentence with probation and community restitution."
"I understand, Detective," Julian replied, taking the folder. "I'll be there."
Miller nodded once, then looked toward Evelyn. "A car is waiting to take you to the medical center for your final checkup, Ms. Cross. After that... the state has set up a transitional support program for victims of long-term captivity."
Evelyn offered the detective a small, appreciative nod. "Thank you, Detective. For everything."

As the detective walked back toward his vehicle, Evelyn turned and began walking down the winding gravel driveway toward the open road beyond the gates. Julian didn't hesitate; he stepped forward, matching her pace stride for stride.
