Chapter 10 - The Ledger of Souls

Ten agonizing minutes passed before Detective Miller emerged from the dark tunnel. His face was pale, stripped of all color, and his hands trembled slightly as he clutched a heavy, leather-bound ledger under his arm.

"Did you find him?" Julian asked immediately, stepping forward despite the guard's restraining hand. "Did you find Thomas?"

Detective Miller didn't answer right away. He walked slowly out of the tunnel, stepping into the dim light of the wine cellar, and placed the leather ledger on a nearby oak tasting table. He looked at Julian with an expression of profound sorrow and disbelief.

"Thomas isn't down there, Julian," the detective said quietly.

Margaret let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her shoulders sagging in temporary relief. "I told you! He ran away to Europe! There's nothing down there!"

"Shut up, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller snapped, his voice cold as ice. He flipped open the heavy ledger, revealing pages filled with neat, meticulous handwriting dating back over half a century. "Thomas isn't down there because he was moved forty years ago. But do you know who is down there?"

The detective pointed a gloved finger at an entry near the center of the ledger, dated November 14th, 1982.

"A dozen former business partners," Detective Miller said, reading aloud from the page. "Rival developers, investigating journalists, and whistleblowers who threatened to expose your family's financial crimes. Your grandfather didn't just build an empire, Julian. He built a cemetery."

Julian stared at the pages, his mind struggling to process the sheer scale of the horror his bloodline had committed. "My grandfather... and my father?"

"And your mother," Detective Miller added, looking directly at Margaret. "Her initials are signed at the bottom of every single transfer of ownership following a disappearance. She didn't just know about the murders; she audited them."

Margaret stood frozen, her eyes wide and unblinking, staring at the ledger as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike. The aristocratic facade was completely gone, replaced by the naked, shivering reality of a criminal cornered by history.

Evelyn stepped out from the mouth of the tunnel, holding a small, rusted metal box she had retrieved from the depths below. She set it gently on the tasting table next to the ledger.

"You thought you buried me in the crawlspace because you wanted to silence me," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the damp air like a razor. "You thought I was just another inconvenient truth you could sweep under the floorboards."

"I did what had to be done," Margaret whispered, her voice cracking as she finally broke her silence. "People like us... we don't fall. We make sure everyone else falls first."

"Your fall is finished, Margaret," Detective Miller said, pulling out his radio to call for transport and forensics teams. "The whole house is coming down."
