Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The grandfather clock's pendulum swung back and forth with a heavy, metronomic rhythm that seemed to echo the pounding of Julian's heart. He stared at Evelyn, the woman he had loved, whose memory he had mourned for over a thousand days, now standing before him like a ghost dragged into the waking world.

"What are you talking about?" Julian asked, his voice trembling as he took a tentative step toward her. "What did my father bury?"

Margaret lunged forward, her face twisted in absolute panic, grabbing Julian's arm with bruising force. "Don't listen to her, Julian! She is poisoning your mind! Your father was an honorable man who built this empire from nothing! She's trying to destroy everything he worked for!"

Evelyn let out a low, humorless chuckle. "Honorable. Is that what you call a man who pushes his business partner down an elevator shaft and buries the deed in the cellar? Is that what you call a man who left a ledger detailing every bribe and blackmail scheme right under the floorboards of his study?"

Julian pulled his arm free from Margaret's grip, staring at his mother with newfound horror. The defensive terror in Margaret's eyes answered the question before she could speak.

"You knew," Julian said, the words heavy and absolute. "You both knew."

"We knew nothing!" Margaret shrieked, losing her composure entirely. She grabbed a heavy crystal vase from a nearby side table, her knuckles whitening around the base. "She is a lying, ungrateful beast! She was never meant to be a part of this family!"

The maid gasped, backing away toward the heavy front doors as Margaret raised the vase high above her head, her eyes fixed on Evelyn with murderous intent. Julian didn't hesitate; he threw himself forward, intercepting his mother just as she swung downward. The vase shattered against the floorboards, shards of crystal spraying across the polished wood.

"Have you lost your mind?" Julian roared, shoving Margaret back against the wall.

"She's going to ruin us, Julian!" Margaret sobbed, her aristocratic mask completely shattered as tears carved tracks through her makeup. "Everything we have will be seized! We'll be thrown in prison!"

Evelyn stood watching the display with cold detachment, her arms wrapped tightly around her thin frame. "Prison is too kind for what your family deserves," she said softly. "The truth is already out, Margaret. You can't put it back in the ground."

Evelyn turned and walked toward the heavy oak door leading to the estate's private library—the exact room where Julian's father had spent his final years.

"Where are you going?" Julian called out, following closely behind her.

Evelyn paused at the threshold, her hand resting on the brass doorknob. She looked back over her shoulder, a dark, chilling shadow passing across her eyes. "To show you what your father kept behind the wall."
