Chapter 8 - The Inheritance of Blood

The silence in the study was absolute, broken only by the hum of the officers' portable radios and the distant, low rumble of thunder outside. Detective Miller carefully picked up the silver locket from the floor, snapping it open with a gentle click. Inside was a faded photograph of two young boys—Julian and Thomas—smiling brightly before wealth and greed had poisoned their family name.
Julian sank heavily into his father's leather armchair, burying his face in his hands. The sheer magnitude of his family's depravity crashed over him like a tidal wave. Every luxury he had ever enjoyed, every brick of the grand estate, every dollar in their offshore accounts—it was all built on a foundation of betrayal, theft, and murder.
"You knew," Julian said, his voice muffled by his hands as he looked up at Margaret. "All these years, you let me mourn a brother you murdered."
Margaret didn't look at him. She stared straight ahead at the wall, her expression hollow and vacant. "He was weak," she said softly, her voice devoid of any remorse. "Your father knew it. Thomas would have given everything away to charity the moment he inherited the title. He didn't have the stomach for what it took to keep this family at the top."
"So you locked him in a basement and lied to the world?" Detective Miller asked, his voice dripping with disgust as he secured the documents in an evidence bag. "You built an empire on top of a mass grave."
"We built an empire," Margaret corrected sharply, lifting her chin with a flicker of her former arrogance. "And no one can prove a single thing about Thomas. That's a fifty-year-old cold case with no body."
Evelyn stepped forward into the circle of light cast by the desk lamp. She looked down at Margaret with a gaze so piercing that even the seasoned detective instinctively stepped back.
"You're right about one thing, Margaret," Evelyn said quietly. "There might not be a body in that suitcase. Because Thomas wasn't locked in the basement."
Margaret's aristocratic mask finally crumbled entirely. Her eyes widened in genuine terror, her breath catching in her throat. "What are you talking about?"
"When I was locked in the crawlspace," Evelyn continued, her voice steady and chilling, "I found something else behind the brick wall. A second set of stairs leading deeper into the bedrock. Right beneath the wine cellar."
Detective Miller turned his sharp gaze back to Evelyn. "What's down there, Ms. Cross?"
May you like
Evelyn didn't answer immediately. She walked slowly toward the study door, gesturing for the officers to follow her down the dark corridor. "Come and see for yourself."
