Chapter 13 - The Final Tremor

The roar of the collapsing east wing shook the entire Vance estate, sending a massive plume of gray dust billowing out through the shattered windows and front doors. Outside, the gathered reporters, police officers, and paramedics scrambled backward in panic, shouting warnings as the grand mansion settled into a tilted, ruined shell of its former glory.
Julian leaped out of the ambulance, ignoring the paramedic's protests, and sprinted toward the front porch. "Evelyn!" he screamed over the deafening din of falling debris. "Evelyn!"
Through the thick cloud of dust billowing from the open doorway, two figures emerged, coughing violently. The young state trooper dragged Evelyn across the threshold just as the grand portico above them gave way, crashing down onto the gravel driveway with a thunderous impact.
Julian reached them instantly, grabbing Evelyn by the shoulders and pulling her into his arms. She buried her face in his chest, coughing as the dust settled around them.
"Are you alright? Did you find what you needed?" Julian asked frantically, checking her over for new injuries.
Evelyn pulled back slightly, her breathing ragged but steady. She looked up at the crumbling mansion, watching as the grand chandelier finally detached from the ceiling and plummeted into the ruined foyer below.
"I found closure," Evelyn whispered, her voice carrying a quiet, unshakable strength. "The house is gone, Julian. And with it, everything they tried to hide."
Detective Miller rushed over, breathless, joining the small circle. "Everyone clear of the structure! The entire foundation is failing!"
Sirens wailed in the distance as additional emergency units arrived to secure the perimeter. Margaret, sitting handcuffed in the back of a police transport van parked down the driveway, watched through the wire mesh as her ancestral home crumbled into dust. Her face was completely devoid of expression—a broken woman witnessing the literal collapse of her life's work.
Julian stood beside Evelyn, watching the estate burn away its remaining secrets. The heavy burden of his family's sins, carried across generations of lies and silence, had finally been brought to light and destroyed by the very earth beneath their feet.
"What do we do now?" Julian asked softly, not looking at the ruins, but looking directly into Evelyn's eyes.
Evelyn took a deep breath of the clear morning air, free of the dust, the basement, and the lies. For the first time in three years, a genuine, unburdened smile touched her lips.

"We walk away," Evelyn said simply. "Together."
