Chapter 1 - The Veil Beneath the Dust

The heavy hum of the vintage vacuum cleaner died down against the polished oak floor of the grand estate. The young maid, her hair tied back neatly, knelt in her crisp uniform with the white collar and apron, staring at a stray thread snagged in a floorboard crevice. She reached down to tug it free, but the thread did not snap. It resisted. With a cautious pull, a long, pristine white wedding veil began to slide out from the dark gap, its delicate lace catching the morning sunlight filtering through the tall windows.

Julian, tall and sharp-featured in his white dress shirt and black trousers, stood nearby. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets until his eyes locked onto the white fabric. The air in the room grew instantly heavy.

"Boss," the maid said, her voice barely above a whisper, "this veil is coming out of the floor."

Julian stepped forward, dropping to one knee. He gripped the fragile lace, his knuckles turning stark white as he pulled the remaining length free. A collective chill settled over the foyer.

"This was Evelyn's," Julian said, his voice trembling despite his rigid posture. His eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for answers that should not exist.

Margaret, the matriarch of the household, swept into the room, her elaborate diamond necklace catching the light like frozen tears. She took in the scene with a cold, hardened stare, her expression instantly hardening into a mask of defensive fury.

"Evelyn ran away, you know that," Margaret snapped, her tone dripping with venom. "Stop playing these sick games, Julian. We all signed the papers. She packed her bags and left the estate the night before the wedding."

"She didn't pack everything, Margaret," Julian retorted, his voice rising, cracking with a dangerous mixture of grief and suppressed panic. "You think I don't know the difference between a runaway bride and a ghost? This veil was buried! Someone stuffed it down there!"

"You are losing your mind!" Margaret shouted back, stepping closer, her diamond necklace shaking against her collarbone. "Are you accusing me in front of the help? Evelyn abandoned you! She broke your heart and humiliated this family! Drop that filthy rag right now!"

"Don't tell me what to do in my own house!" Julian snarled, his face contorting with fury as he stared down at the dark crevice. "Something is wrong with this house. Something has always been wrong!"

Suddenly, a cold, bony hand shot out from the dark gap in the floorboards, its fingers clamping around Julian’s wrist with terrifying strength. Julian gasped, paralyzed by shock, while the maid shrieked in absolute horror. Below the floorboards, a pair of hollow, dirt-streaked eyes locked onto Julian's paralyzed gaze.

"I never left this house," a raspy, broken voice whispered from the dark abyss beneath their feet.
