Chapter 11 - The Collapse of the Empire

By morning, the grand estate was surrounded by flashing red and blue lights. Local police cruisers, state crime scene vans, and forensic ambulances filled the manicured gravel driveway, crushing the expensive flowerbeds Margaret had spent decades cultivating. Neighbors stood at the wrought-iron gates in stunned disbelief, whispering among themselves as news vans began to arrive, their satellite dishes pointed directly at the mansion.

Julian sat in the back of an ambulance, a paramedic wrapping a thermal blanket around his shoulders while checking his blood pressure. He hadn't spoken a word since leaving the wine cellar. His mind felt hollow, stripped of every illusion he had ever held about his family, his heritage, and his own life.

Across the gravel driveway, Margaret was led down the stone steps in handcuffs, her head forced down by an officer as flashbulbs from newly arrived reporters exploded around her like miniature lightning storms. She didn't look up, her expensive shoes dragging through the mud she had spent a lifetime trying to rise above.

Evelyn stood on the front porch of the estate, wrapped in a clean wool coat provided by one of the state troopers. Her face was still bruised, and her eyes carried the heavy weight of three years spent in darkness, but as she looked out over the chaotic scene, a profound sense of peace settled over her features.

Detective Miller walked up the stone steps, stopping beside her. "An ambulance is waiting to take you to the hospital for a full evaluation, Ms. Cross. You survived an unimaginable ordeal."

Evelyn nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on the heavy oak front doors of the mansion. "I survived because I refused to let them bury my soul along with my body, Detective."

"The state will seize all Vance assets as proceeds of racketeering and homicide," Miller continued, pulling a small notebook from his pocket. "The estate will be demolished as part of the forensic excavation. You won't have to worry about this house ever again."

"It's not the house I'm worried about," Evelyn said softly. She turned her head, searching the crowd of emergency personnel until her eyes locked onto Julian sitting in the back of the ambulance.

Julian looked back at her across the gravel drive. Their eyes met through the cold morning air—a silent exchange between two victims of the same monstrous legacy. Julian raised a hand tentatively, as if asking for forgiveness he knew he didn't deserve.

Evelyn held his gaze for a long moment, neither forgiving nor condemning, before turning back to the detective.

"I need to go inside one last time," Evelyn said suddenly, her voice firm.

Detective Miller frowned, raising a hand in warning. "Ms. Cross, the house is currently an active crime scene. The structural engineers said the foundation is unstable."

"Just five minutes," Evelyn insisted, her eyes locking onto his with unwavering resolve. "There's something I left in the study. Something I need to burn."
