Chapter 12 - Flames in the Library

Detective Miller hesitated, watching Evelyn's resolute expression before finally nodding. "Fine. Five minutes. And I'm sending an officer in with you. Don't touch anything else."
Evelyn walked through the heavy front doors of the mansion for the final time. The grand foyer was empty, the vacuum cleaner still abandoned near the crevice where the wedding veil had first appeared. She walked past it without slowing down, her footsteps echoing through the silent halls until she reached the private study.
The study looked like a battlefield. Papers were scattered across the floor, the iron lockbox lay open on the desk, and the hidden brick fireplace remained gaping and exposed. The young state trooper assigned to escort her stood near the doorway, holding his flashlight steady as Evelyn crossed the room toward the mahogany desk.
She ignored the scattered photographs and legal documents. Instead, she reached into the pocket of her wool coat and pulled out a small, worn photograph of herself and Julian, taken during happier days before the wedding, before the greed, before the betrayal.
She walked over to the open fireplace, knelt down on the soot-stained hearth, and tossed the photograph into the cold brick cavity. Then, she struck a wooden match against the box and dropped it onto the paper.
A small flame flickered to life, casting a warm, orange glow across her bruised face. She watched the flames consume the image slowly, reducing the last remaining shred of her old life to ash.
"Ms. Cross, we really need to go," the trooper urged gently, stepping further into the room. "The structural team outside says the foundation is shifting."
Evelyn stood up, dusting off her hands, and turned toward the door. But as she took her first step away from the fireplace, a low, ominous groan echoed from deep beneath the floorboards. The entire room shuddered violently.
"Earthquake?" the trooper muttered, dropping into a defensive stance.
"No," Evelyn said, her eyes widening in realization. "The support pillars in the wine cellar... when they opened the tunnel, the foundation compromised the load-bearing walls."
A loud crack ripped through the walls as the mahogany bookshelves began to pull away from the plaster. Books cascaded onto the floor in a chaotic avalanche.
"We need to get out! Now!" the trooper shouted, grabbing Evelyn's arm and pulling her toward the hallway.
They sprinted out of the study just as the heavy oak doorframe splintered inward. The floor beneath the hallway buckled violently, dropping a foot in a matter of seconds. Dust and plaster filled the air, choking out the light from the windows.

Evelyn stumbled, losing her footing on the collapsing floorboards, while the trooper pulled her up with a desperate grip, dragging her toward the grand foyer just as the entire ceiling of the east wing collapsed in a deafening roar of falling timber and shattered glass.
