Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guests

The heavy footsteps echoed down the grand hallway, growing louder and more purposeful with every second. Julian froze, the iron lockbox still open on his father's desk, the incriminating photographs scattered across the mahogany surface like fallen autumn leaves. Margaret spun around, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she darted toward the study door.

"Stay back!" Margaret hissed, but it was already too late.

Two tall men in dark suits stepped into the study, their badges gleaming sharply under the dim light of the library lamp. Behind them stood a younger man in a crisp police uniform, his hand resting casually on the holster of his service belt.

"Julian Vance?" the lead detective asked, his voice sharp and authoritative, cutting through the heavy silence of the room. "And Margaret Vance?"

Julian swallowed hard, stepping away from the desk to shield the open lockbox, though he knew the attempt was futile. "I'm Julian Vance. Who are you, and how did you get into my house?"

The detective flashed his badge briefly. "Detective Miller, State Financial Crimes and Homicide Division. We have a warrant to search the premises regarding an ongoing investigation into corporate fraud and missing persons tied to the Vance estate."

Margaret surged forward, her aristocratic composure completely vanished, replaced by desperate fury. "You have no right to be here! This is a private residence! Where is Chief Henderson? He would never authorize a warrant without consulting me!"

Detective Miller looked at Margaret with a cold, unyielding stare. "Chief Henderson was suspended this morning, Mrs. Vance, after an internal audit revealed decades of suppressed evidence and falsified police reports originating from this very precinct. Your brother can no longer protect you."

The blood drained entirely from Margaret's face. She stumbled backward, catching herself against the edge of the bookshelf, her breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

Evelyn stepped out from the shadows of the bookcase, her torn wedding dress fluttering slightly in the draft from the open hallway. She didn't speak, but her presence in the room immediately drew the attention of every officer. Detective Miller’s eyes darted from the dirt-streaked woman in a wedding dress to the scattered photographs on the desk, then back again.

"Good God," the detective murmured, his professional detachment faltering for a fraction of a second. "Is that... Evelyn Cross?"

"She was reported missing three years ago," Julian said, his voice hollow and dead. "Or so I was told."

Detective Miller stepped further into the room, his gaze fixed on Evelyn's bruised face and torn attire. "Ma'am, do you need medical attention? We can have an ambulance here in minutes."

Evelyn slowly shook her head, her dark eyes locked onto Margaret. "I don't need a doctor, Detective. I need a witness. Everything you need to prove decades of murder, extortion, and false imprisonment is sitting right on that desk."

Margaret let out a choked, desperate cry, lunging toward the desk to sweep the papers off the surface. But the second detective moved with lightning speed, grabbing Margaret's wrists and pinning her arms behind her back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.

"Margaret Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice," Detective Miller declared, pulling out a pair of additional cuffs.

As the cold metal clamped around Julian's wrists as well, Julian didn't resist. He only stared at the floor, accepting his share of the guilt. But as the officers began gathering the evidence, a sharp, metallic scraping sound echoed from deep beneath the floorboards, as if something else was trying to claw its way out.
