Chapter 8: The Morning Light

By sunrise, the rain had stopped, leaving the sky painted in soft pastel shades of pink and orange. The air smelled clean, carrying the scent of sea salt and wet earth. Police vehicles had cleared out, taking Adrian away in handcuffs to face trial on multiple felony charges of kidnapping, extortion, and fraud.

The heavy steel door of the panic room opened, and Julian stood there, battered but unbowed. He looked down at Elena, who was sitting on the sofa with all three babies asleep around her.

"It's over," Julian said softly, offering a warm, weary smile. "The house is safe. The law has him now."

Elena stood up, tears rising once again, but this time they were tears of profound relief. She stepped toward Julian and wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face against his chest. Julian held her gently, resting his chin on her head, listening to the calm rhythm of her breathing.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "For standing between us and the dark."

"I will always stand there," Julian replied, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes. "You and these girls are my home now."

Later that morning, they carried Hope, Grace, and Faith out into the manor’s garden. The morning sun dried the dew on the grass, and red rose bushes in full bloom filled the air with a delicate fragrance. For the first time in three long years, Elena felt the warmth of the sun without fear.
