Chapter 2: Shadows of Deception

The tension in the ballroom mounted as security personnel began edging closer. Guests whispered behind silk fans and champagne flutes, recognizing the powerful figures involved. Adrian Vance was a ruthless real estate tycoon, while Julian Sterling was a respected philanthropist and shipping magnate known for his unwavering integrity.
"They are my blood!" Adrian snarled, stepping into Julian’s space, his eyes wild with desperation. "Don't come any closer, Elena! He's lying to you!"
Julian did not flinch. He adjusted his grip on the three infant girls, keeping them safe against his chest. One of the baby girls reached her tiny, chubby hand toward Elena, her little fingers opening and closing in the air.
"You left before they were even born, Adrian," Julian replied, his baritone voice calm, steady, and loud enough for those nearby to hear. "You abandoned Elena when she was sick, and when these girls came into the world, you tried to sell them into an offshore adoption ring to clear your gambling debts. I stepped in. I saved them."
Elena gasped, covering her mouth with a trembling hand. The horror of Julian’s words hit her like a physical blow. The missing months, the dark clinical room, the cold news that her pregnancy had failed—it was all a monstrous scheme engineered by the man standing behind her.

"Is this true?" Elena asked, turning to face Adrian, her tear-filled eyes narrowing with a quiet, fierce rage. "You stole my babies?"
Adrian’s face drained of color. He looked around at the judgmental stares of the city's high society. Knowing he was cornered, he backed away, pointing a finger at Julian. "This isn't over, Sterling! You won't take what's mine!" He turned on his heel and disappeared into the crowd.
