Chapter 7: Standing in the Gap

In the main foyer of the manor, the front doors were kicked open. Rain slammed into the entry hall as Adrian walked in, flanked by two burly men wearing dark raincoats. Adrian’s eyes were bloodshot, his suit rumpled, looking like a man who had lost everything and had nothing left to lose.
"Sterling!" Adrian shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Give me those children and the files, and I might leave you alive!"
Julian stepped out from the grand staircase, standing calmly on the landing above. He was completely alone, but his presence filled the vast space with imposing authority.
"You're too late, Adrian," Julian said, his voice cold and steady. "The digital files were transferred to the District Attorney's office twenty minutes ago. The police are already on their way up the hill."
Adrian pulled a heavy steel prybar from his coat, his face twisting with rage. "You ruined me! I built an empire, and you tore it down for a woman who didn't even want you!"
"Elena never wanted you," Julian corrected, taking a slow step down the stairs. "She was trapped by your lies. You treated human lives like assets on a ledger. You thought you could buy, sell, and break people without consequences. But justice has a way of finding men like you."

Distant police sirens began to wail through the stormy night, their blue and red lights flashing through the tall glass windows of the foyer. Adrian’s hired men looked at each other in panic and immediately turned, fleeing into the rainy night.
Left alone, Adrian glared up at Julian, realization finally sinking in. He dropped the iron bar onto the marble floor with a loud, metallic clatter just as armed officers burst through the entrance.
