Chapter 12: The Trial of the Century

In late October, the criminal trial of Adrian Vance commenced at the High Court. The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal experts, and citizens who had followed the dramatic story from the beginning.

Elena took the witness stand on the second day. Dressed in a simple dark suit, her posture erect and her voice clear, she delivered her testimony without a single tremor. She detailed the isolation, the forged medical consent forms, the theft of her inheritance, and the agonizing lie that her children had died.

When Adrian’s defense team attempted to cross-examine her, painting her as an unstable mother who had abandoned her family, Elena looked directly at the jury.

"A mother does not abandon her children," Elena stated with absolute conviction. "A mother is robbed when evil men use wealth and power to twist the truth. But truth is not something you can lock away forever."

Julian took the stand next, presenting undeniable digital logs, banking receipts, and audio recordings of Adrian arranging the illegal adoption transfers. The evidence was overwhelming, meticulous, and impossible to refute.

After only two hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict: guilty on all counts, including felony kidnapping, corporate fraud, and conspiracy. Adrian was sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.

As Adrian was led away in handcuffs, he glanced back at Elena one last time. But Elena did not look at him with anger or hatred. She looked at him with quiet pity, seeing a man who had traded his soul for power and ended up with nothing.
