Chapter 8 - The Hunt Begins

Julian ripped the pulsing satellite transmitter off the unconscious mercenary’s chest, crushing the plastic casing beneath his heavy boot heel with a satisfying crunch of circuits and glass.

"They know exactly where we are, Julian," Grandmother said calmly, using her cane to steady herself as she stepped over the debris, her sharp eyes scanning the ruined living room without a hint of fear. "Staying in this city is a death sentence for all of us."

Julian looked down at Maya, who was now holding the baby in her arms with surprising tenderness, her tear-stained face looking far too old and weary for a child of her tender years.

"We're not running anymore, Grandmother," Julian said, his voice dropping to a cold, resolute whisper that left no room for argument. "If Marcus wants to finish this war, we're going to take the fight directly to his front door."

The elderly woman stared at him for a long moment, a slow, grim smile stretching across her weathered face before she gave a sharp nod of approval.

"That's the Sterling blood I raised," she murmured, turning toward the private elevator lobby where the emergency backup generator was humming quietly. "The underground garage has an armored transport vehicle registered under my old corporate accounts that the feds didn't impound; let's move before the local police arrive and try to lock us down."

Julian scooped Maya up into his arms once more, securing the sleeping infant in a tactical baby carrier strapped tightly across his chest, and grabbed his spare ammunition magazines from the desk.

Within minutes, the three of them descended into the subterranean parking level, bypassing the main elevators and using the staff service stairwells to avoid detection.

The underground garage was dark, damp, and smelled heavily of exhaust fumes and motor oil, illuminated only by flickering fluorescent safety lights overhead.

Parked in the far corner sat a matte-black, bulletproof SUV outfitted with reinforced steel plating and run-flat tires, looking like something straight out of a military deployment zone.

"Get in the back," Julian ordered quietly, opening the heavy rear door and helping Maya and Grandmother climb inside before sliding behind the armored driver's seat.

The engine roared to life with a deep, guttural growl as Julian punched the ignition button, shifting the heavy vehicle into gear and tearing out of the parking structure toward the financial district.

The neon lights of the city blurred past the reinforced windows as Julian navigated the deserted pre-dawn streets, heading directly for Marcus’s private corporate headquarters downtown.

As they approached the towering glass skyscraper bearing Marcus’s family crest on the lobby facade, Julian noticed something deeply unsettling about the building's exterior lighting.

Every single window in the forty-story skyscraper was completely dark, save for a single, glowing penthouse office at the very top of the structure.

"It's a trap," Grandmother warned softly from the back seat, leaning forward to peer through the bulletproof windshield at the looming tower. "Marcus knows we're coming, and he's waiting for us at the top of the food chain."

Julian shifted the SUV into park right in front of the grand glass entrance, killing the engine and letting the heavy silence of the night settle over the vehicle.

"Let him wait," Julian replied coldly, checking the magazine of his Sig Sauer before opening the door and stepping out into the cold morning air.

As Julian walked toward the revolving glass doors of the skyscraper, the heavy steel security barrier suddenly dropped from the ceiling, blocking his exit and sealing them inside the lobby.
