Chapter 7 - The Breach at Midnight

"Get down on the floor, Grandmother!" Julian yelled, grabbing the elderly woman by the shoulders and shoving her behind the heavy mahogany bookcase as the front doors blew inward with a deafening roar.

A blinding wall of smoke and orange flame engulfed the entryway, showering the luxury apartment in splinters of expensive wood and shattered drywall.

Through the thick, acrid haze, three heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear and night-vision goggles charged into the room, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the space for targets.

Julian didn't hesitate; stepping out from behind the desk, he raised his Sig Sauer and fired two rapid shots, catching the lead intruder squarely in the ceramic chest plate and sending him crashing backward over the coffee table.

"Contact! Target is armed!" the second mercenary shouted, opening fire with a suppressed automatic rifle that chewed up the expensive leather upholstery and shattered the glass windows overlooking the city.

Julian dropped flat onto the floor, sliding behind the reinforced steel frame of the wet bar while glass and plaster rained down around him like a relentless storm.

"Maya! Stay down!" Julian screamed over the deafening cacophony of gunfire, peering around the edge of the bar to track the movements of the remaining attackers.

The two surviving mercenaries advanced methodically, moving with lethal military precision toward the living room area where the children were hidden behind the sofa.

A cold, terrifying fury surged through Julian’s veins, washing away all fear and replacing it with a singular, primal instinct to protect his bloodline at any cost.

Leaping out from behind the bar, Julian fired three calculated shots in rapid succession, hitting the second mercenary in the shoulder and dropping him instantly to the floor.

The third mercenary spun around, leveling his assault rifle directly at Julian’s chest, but before he could squeeze the trigger, a heavy mahogany cane cracked down hard across the back of his helmet.

Grandmother had crawled out from behind the bookcase, swinging her heavy cane with surprising strength and throwing the attacker off balance just long enough for Julian to lunge forward and drive the butt of his pistol into the man’s temple.

The final intruder collapsed like a ragdoll, hitting the plush carpet with a heavy thud and falling completely unconscious.

Silence descended upon the devastated penthouse, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens echoing up from the street far below and the soft, terrified crying of little Maya from behind the sofa.

Julian lowered his smoking pistol, his breathing ragged as he rushed over to the couch, dropping to his knees and pulling Maya and the infant into his arms.

"You're safe, sweetheart, it's over, I've got you," Julian whispered soothingly, pressing his face against the little girl's blonde hair while his own hands shook uncontrollably.

"Are the bad men gone?" Maya sobbed, clutching tightly to his shirt.

"They're gone," Julian promised, glancing back at the unconscious mercenaries scattered across the destroyed living room.

As Julian stood up to check the perimeter, his eyes caught a flashing red light blinking beneath the tactical vest of the first mercenary he had shot.
