Chapter 4 - The Vault of Secrets

"Get away from him!" Grandmother barked, swinging her heavy mahogany cane with surprising speed and catching Elena squarely across the shins, sending the bride crashing hard to the marble floor.

Elena screamed in pain and fury, her pristine white wedding dress instantly stained with dirt and smeared makeup as she thrashed against the polished stone.

Julian didn't even flinch as he stood up, slipping the tiny microchip into his tuxedo pocket alongside the faded photograph of his late sister.

"It’s over, Elena," Julian said coldly, looking down at the woman he had loved with a profound sense of disgust. "The police were already notified the moment your offshore accounts were flagged by my corporate security team this morning."

Sirens began to wail softly in the distance, growing louder by the second as multiple police cruisers converged on the exclusive wedding venue.

Elena let out a feral hiss, pushing herself up onto her knees and glaring up at Julian with unadulterated hatred burning in her blue eyes.

"You think the police will save you from what’s coming, Julian? My family owns half the judges in this state!" she screamed hysterically, abandoning all pretenses of grace.

"Not anymore they don't," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the main entrance as the heavy oak doors pushed open to reveal three federal agents in tactical vests, led by Captain Vance of the state financial crimes division.

Captain Vance walked briskly down the aisle, ignoring the terrified wedding guests and stepping directly up to Julian with a solemn expression.

"Mr. Vance, I presume you have the warrant?" Julian asked quietly, handing over the silver medallion and the microchip without a moment's hesitation.

"We do, Mr. Sterling. And we have your bride’s co-conspirators in custody downtown as we speak," Captain Vance replied, nodding respectfully before turning his attention toward the trembling bride on the floor.

Elena froze, the color draining entirely from her face as she realized her entire criminal empire had collapsed in a matter of minutes.

Two female officers stepped forward, roughly hauling Elena to her feet and slapping steel handcuffs over her delicate wrists as she cursed violently at the assembled crowd.

Julian turned his back on her, walking past the gawking wedding guests to kneel once again in front of little Maya and the infant resting safely in her trembling arms.

"Let's take you both home," Julian whispered gently, extending his hands to lift the children up against his chest.

As Julian turned to walk out of the venue with his newly discovered niece and nephew, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the doorway, followed by the sound of a gunshot.
