Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Altar

"Who let them in here?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble as he turned his blazing blue eyes away from his trembling bride and toward the darkened side entrance of the magnificent ballroom.
The heavy oak door swung fully open, revealing a frail, elderly woman dressed in somber black mourning attire, leaning heavily on an ornate mahogany cane that clicked rhythmically against the polished marble floor.
Elena gasped, a sharp, audible intake of breath that sounded remarkably like a death rattle as the old woman stepped forward into the harsh, unforgiving glare of the crystal chandeliers.
"Hello, Julian," the matriarch rasped, her voice dry as autumn leaves, carrying an authority that instantly commanded the attention of every terrified guest still trapped inside the venue.
Julian’s knees nearly buckled under the sheer weight of recognition, because the woman standing before him was supposed to be resting safely in a secured family mausoleum half a continent away.
"Grandmother?" Julian whispered, his fingers gripping the silver medallion so tightly that the metal edges bit painfully into his flesh, drawing a tiny bead of bright crimson blood.
"You didn't really think you could bury our legacy under expensive champagne and white roses, did you, boy?" the old woman challenged, her sharp eyes darting immediately to the trembling little girl holding the crying infant in the aisle.
Elena tried to step between the elderly newcomer and her stunned groom, but Julian shoved her aside with a rough, emotionless push that sent the bride stumbling into the floral displays.
"Stay out of this, Elena, or by God I will tear this entire empire down to the bare dirt before the sun sets today," Julian warned, his tone flat, cold, and entirely devoid of the warmth that had defined him just moments before.
The old woman tapped her cane sharply against the floor, a signal that caused two burly security guards in dark suits to step out of the shadows behind her, blocking every available exit from the grand hall.
"The children belong to the true bloodline, Julian, and the woman standing behind you is the one who ordered their execution twenty-four hours ago," the matriarch announced, pointing a bony finger directly at the weeping bride.
Julian froze, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird as he slowly turned his head to look back at the woman he had sworn to spend the rest of his life protecting.

Elena stopped crying instantly, her face going frighteningly blank as she offered a chilling, twisted smile.
