Chapter 6 - The Anonymous Transmission

Julian wiped the antiseptic from his shoulder, threw on a clean black shirt, and strode briskly back into his home office, his eyes locked on the glowing screen of the encrypted laptop.
The anonymous video file continued to blink rhythmically, waiting for him to click the play button and expose whatever new nightmare awaited him in the shadows.
"Don't do it, Julian," Grandmother’s voice echoed softly from the doorway as the elderly matriarch shuffled into the study, leaning heavily on her cane. "Some doors are better left locked forever, especially the ones stained with our family's blood."
Julian didn't look back at her, his jaw set in a hard, stubborn line as he gripped the edge of the glass desk with both hands.
"Elena tried to have these children murdered, and someone out there is still trying to finish the job, Grandmother; I need to know every single person involved," Julian replied flatly, his voice devoid of any hesitation.
With a single click of the mouse, the video file sprang to life, illuminating the dark office with the harsh blue light of a low-resolution security camera recording.
The footage showed a dimly lit underground parking garage, timestamped only three days before the wedding, revealing two shadowy figures engaged in a tense, hushed conversation beside a luxury sedan.
As the camera adjusted its auto-focus, the face of the first figure became terrifyingly clear, causing Julian to choke back a raw gasp of disbelief.
"Marcus?" Julian whispered, staring at the screen as his best friend and best man walked out of the shadows, shaking hands with a high-ranking corporate board member.
"I told you," Grandmother muttered bitterly, stepping further into the room and gripping her cane until her knuckles turned chalk-white. "Betrayal doesn't come from strangers, Julian. It always wears the face of someone you invited to sit at your table."
On the screen, Marcus’s voice crackled through the audio feed, loud and crystal clear in the quiet underground garage.
"Once Julian marries Elena and signs the corporate merger papers, we drain the primary trust fund and dump the kids into the foster system permanently," Marcus said with a sickeningly casual shrug.
Julian felt his stomach churn violently, a wave of profound nausea washing over him as he realized his closest friend had actively participated in the plot to destroy his family and murder innocent children.
"Marcus was supposed to stand beside me at the altar," Julian muttered, his voice trembling with a lethal combination of grief and cold, calculation rage.
"And he would have, if that little girl hadn't shown up at the church doors with your sister's medallion," Grandmother pointed out sharply, tapping her cane against the hardwood floor to regain his complete attention.
Before Julian could formulate a plan to hunt Marcus down, the penthouse's private security system chimed with a frantic, high-pitched alarm, flashing red warnings across every smart screen in the apartment.
"Intruders on the private elevator," the automated robotic voice announced calmly. "Perimeter breach on floor forty-two."
Julian spun around, his heart pounding wildly against his ribs as he reached into the top drawer of his desk and pulled out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol.
"They found us faster than I expected," Julian whispered, glancing toward the living room where little Maya and the infant were sleeping peacefully on the sofa.
