Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Blood

"Maya, get back in that elevator right now!" Julian yelled, panic overriding his cold composure as he lowered his pistol for a single, critical second to shield the children from view.
It was the exact opening Marcus had been waiting for; lunging forward with desperate speed, Marcus drove his shoulder hard into Julian’s chest, sending both men crashing through the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
The sound of shattering safety glass echoed like a bomb blast across the forty floors of the skyscraper as Julian and Marcus tumbled out into the open morning air.
"Julian!" Grandmother screamed, rushing to the shattered edge of the penthouse with her shotgun raised, but holding her fire as the two men locked limbs in a deadly freefall toward the glass canopy of the lobby below.
Julian twisted mid-air, using his superior leverage to slam Marcus hard against the reinforced framework of the lower glass awning, absorbing the brunt of the impact with a brutal crunch of bruised ribs and tearing fabric.
The glass canopy shattered beneath their weight, dumping both men violently onto the marble floor of the ground-floor lobby amidst a storm of glittering debris and shattered beams.
Julian groaned in pain, coughing up a mouthful of copper-tasting blood as he pushed himself up off the floor, his left shoulder screaming in agony where the previous gunshot wound had reopened.
Across the room, Marcus lay motionless amidst the rubble, his expensive charcoal suit soaked in blood, his eyes staring blankly up at the vaulted ceiling with a glazed, unseeing expression.
Sirens wailed outside the building in a deafening crescendo as dozens of police cruisers, fire trucks, and tactical units converged on the main entrance, finally blowing the security shutters wide open with heavy breaching charges.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapon!" Captain Vance shouted, charging into the ruined lobby with a team of tactical officers, their rifles raised and aimed directly at Julian.
Julian slowly raised his hands, letting his Sig Sauer slip from his fingers and clatter against the marble floor before dropping heavily onto his knees.
"I'm unarmed," Julian panted, his chest heaving as blood dripped steadily from his torn shirt onto the ruined floor.
Captain Vance rushed forward, kneeling beside Julian to check his injuries while signaling for the medical team to move in with a stretcher.
"Where are the children?" Vance demanded urgently, scanning the ruined lobby for signs of Maya and the infant.
"Upstairs... in the penthouse elevator," Julian whispered hoarsely, gripping the captain's tactical vest with desperate strength. "Go get them, Vance. Please."
Before Vance could bark orders to his team, the private elevator doors at the back of the lobby slid open smoothly, revealing Grandmother stepping out calmly with little Maya holding her hand, while the infant slept peacefully in the carrier strapped across the old woman's chest.
"We're right here, Captain," Grandmother announced, her voice ringing out clear and strong through the chaos of the ruined lobby.
Maya spotted Julian kneeling on the bloody marble floor and broke away from Grandmother’s grip, running as fast as her little legs could carry her across the debris.
"Uncle Julian!" she cried, throwing her arms around his neck the moment he caught her in a tight, desperate embrace.
As Julian held the little girl close against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of her breathing, he knew the nightmare of the past thirty years had finally come to an end, but the legal battle for their future was only just beginning.

Three days later, sitting in a secure federal holding room overlooking the city harbor, Julian reviewed the final financial documents recovered from Marcus’s encrypted servers.
