Chapter 5 - Blood on the Threshold

"Get down!" Captain Vance roared, drawing his service weapon and diving toward the floor as a second gunshot shattered one of the massive stained-glass windows above the altar.

Julian shielded little Maya and the infant with his own body, dropping flat onto the ruined floral arrangements while shards of colored glass rained down like lethal confetti across the ballroom floor.

"Sniper in the bell tower across the street!" one of the tactical officers yelled into his shoulder radio, scrambling toward the exit with his rifle raised.

Julian felt a sharp, burning sting graze his left shoulder, but he ignored the hot trickle of blood soaking through his black tuxedo jacket as he focused entirely on keeping the children safe.

"Are you okay, Maya?" Julian asked urgently, checking the little girl over for any injuries while she buried her face into his chest, sobbing hysterically.

"I'm scared, Uncle Julian," she whimpered, using a word that caused a heavy, profound warmth to bloom inside his shattered heart.

Across the room, Elena was screaming in absolute panic as the police officers shoved her violently behind a heavy concrete pillar to shield her from the sniper fire.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this! He was supposed to die alone!" Elena shrieked, her bridal veil torn and hanging pathetically from her hair like a tattered ghost.

Captain Vance crawled over to Julian's position, his face grim and covered in fine glass dust.

"Mr. Sterling, we need to get you and the children out through the kitchen loading dock immediately; this venue has been compromised on multiple fronts," the captain ordered firmly.

Julian nodded, gently lifting Maya into his arms while cradling the sleeping infant securely against his uninjured side, following the federal agents through the smoke-filled corridors of the back hallways.

As they burst out into the cool morning air behind the building, an armored tactical transport vehicle idled by the loading bays, its heavy doors standing wide open.

Julian bundled the children safely into the back of the vehicle before pausing to look back at the grand ballroom windows, realizing with a cold jolt of clarity that Elena’s family had sent the sniper to silence everyone connected to the inheritance.

"Drive," Julian commanded the tactical driver, climbing inside and slamming the heavy steel doors shut.

The vehicle lurched forward, speeding away from the venue and plunging them into an uncertain future filled with hidden enemies and deadly family secrets.

Later that evening, safely barricaded inside Julian’s high-security penthouse apartment overlooking the city skyline, Maya finally fell fast asleep on the plush velvet sofa.

Julian sat at his mahogany desk, cleaning the blood off his shoulder in the bathroom mirror while staring down at the faded photograph of his late sister.
