Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

"You knew who they were!" Julian roared, his voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal and absolute terror as the sound echoed through the vaulted glass ceilings of the grand ballroom.

Elena stumbled backward, her white tulle wedding gown catching on a gilded chair leg as she threw her hands up in a desperate gesture of denial.

"Julian, please, I swear to God I had no idea that girl was going to show up here today, you have to listen to me!" she shrieked, tears instantly carving tracks through her expensive bridal makeup.

Julian ignored her pleading, his forty-year-old frame trembling uncontrollably as he clutched the heavy silver medallion and the faded sepia photograph in his massive, trembling palm.

"Don't lie to me anymore, Elena, because I am holding the proof right here in my hand that you’ve been deceiving me since the very day we met!" he shouted, stepping forward with a menacing, heartbroken intensity that silenced every single wedding guest in the room.

"Daddy!" the little blonde girl in the light blue dress sobbed again, clutching the wailing infant tightly against her chest as she stood stranded in the middle of the pristine white aisle.

"Don’t touch those children!" Julian barked furiously when Elena made a sudden, frantic move to rush past him toward the traumatized youngsters standing defenseless among the trampled floral arrangements.

The entire assembly of wealthy elites watched in stunned silence, whispering behind gloved hands and designer lapels as the meticulously planned society wedding dissolved into an absolute nightmare of hidden pasts and shocking family secrets. Julian stared down at the aged photograph once more, his breath catching in his throat as the unmistakable features of his long-lost sister stared back at him from thirty years in the past.

"This is my family’s crest," he whispered hoarsely, the anger draining from his face to leave behind a terrifying, deathly pallor.

Elena stared at him, her eyes wide with a panic that went far beyond mere wedding-day embarrassment, signaling that she was hiding a much darker truth than anyone could possibly imagine.

Before Julian could demand answers about how the children found him, a heavy wooden side door at the back of the venue slowly creaked open.
