Chapter 10 - The Sin of the Fathers

"You're lying," Marcus hissed, his voice losing its smooth composure as he took a sharp step forward, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides.

"Am I?" Julian challenged, his voice steady as steel as he kept his pistol trained squarely on Marcus’s chest. "That faded photograph isn't just of my mother and sister... it was taken in this exact building the night my grandfather’s corporate assets were illegally seized by your family."

The two armed guards holding the submachine guns exchanged nervous glances, their fingers tightening hesitantly around the triggers as the tension in the penthouse reached a fever pitch.

"Your father orchestrated the hostile takeover, and when my grandfather threatened to expose the financial fraud, your family had them wiped off the registry," Julian continued, every word landing like a physical blow against Marcus’s defenses.

Marcus let out a harsh, bitter laugh, shaking his head as he tried to regain his footing.

"History is written by the victors, Julian, and by sunrise, you and those brats downstairs will just be another tragic headline about a deranged groom snapping on his wedding day," Marcus sneered, gesturing sharply to his guards. "End him."

Before the guards could raise their weapons to fire, the entire penthouse ceiling above them erupted in a deafening shower of glass and splintered timber.

A heavy tactical climbing rope dropped rapidly through the skylight, and down slid Grandmother, swinging with surprising agility and slamming both boots directly into the chest of the left-hand guard.

The guard crashed backward over a glass coffee table, his submachine gun skidding across the polished floor as Grandmother hit the ground rolling, pulling a heavy-duty tactical shotgun from her back sling with practiced efficiency.

"Drop your weapons, or I'll blow your corporate skulls across this view," Grandmother roared, racking a fresh shell into the chamber of the shotgun with a terrifying, metallic clack.

The remaining guard froze, dropping his weapon instantly and raising his hands into the air as Julian swept his pistol over and cracked the butt across the man’s jaw, knocking him out cold.

Marcus stumbled backward, his face turning pale as he realized his armed backup had been neutralized in a matter of seconds by an elderly woman with a shotgun.

"You're out of moves, Marcus," Julian said, stepping forward and closing the distance between them until the barrel of his pistol rested directly against Marcus’s breastbone.

Marcus stared down at the gun barrel, his chest heaving as a desperate, manic desperation took hold of his features.

"You can't kill me, Julian! If I die, the encryption keys to the offshore trust funds vanish forever, and your niece and nephew will spend the rest of their lives penniless orphans!" Marcus shouted frantically, playing his final, desperate card.

Julian paused, his finger hovering over the trigger as the weight of the children's future hung heavily in the balance.

Before Julian could answer, the elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed once more, sliding open to reveal little Maya standing on the threshold, holding the baby safely in her arms.

"Uncle Julian?" Maya’s small, trembling voice cut through the tense silence of the penthouse like a beacon of light.

Julian’s heart skipped a beat as he spun around in horror, realizing the children had followed him up the service elevator despite his strict orders to stay below.
