Chapter 13 - The Echo from Geneva

Julian picked up the vibrating satellite phone, staring at the flashing international country code glowing across the small LED screen with a sudden, sinking feeling in his chest.

"Who could possibly be calling on this frequency?" Grandmother asked, stepping closer to the desk and narrowing her eyes at the flashing device.

Julian pressed the answer button and hit the speaker toggle, holding his breath as a deep, accented voice crackled through the small audio speaker from thousands of miles away.

"Mr. Sterling, I presume? My name is Director Vance of the international banking council in Geneva," the cold, formal voice announced, carrying an authority that instantly commanded absolute attention.

Julian’s hand tightened around the plastic casing of the phone until his knuckles turned white.

"I'm listening," Julian replied sharply, trading a quick, worried glance with Grandmother.

"We have been monitoring the liquidation of Marcus’s offshore assets, and our automated compliance algorithms have flagged a secondary, dormant trust fund linked directly to your family's estate," the Swiss director explained methodically.

Julian frowned, stepping closer to the desk. "My family's estate was fully recovered this morning by federal prosecutors; there are no dormant trust funds left."

"On paper, Mr. Sterling, no. But our records indicate that forty percent of your grandfather's original holdings were never part of the domestic corporate charter—they were quietly funneled into a private Swiss vault controlled by an anonymous overseas holding company known only as the Blackwood Syndicate," the director revealed, dropping a bombshell that left Julian completely speechless.

Grandmother’s face drained of all color, her ancient eyes widening in genuine terror as she gripped the handle of her cane with both hands.

"Not the Blackwood Syndicate," she whispered, her voice trembling for the first time since Julian had seen her. "I thought that name was buried in the ashes of the old world."

Julian turned to her, demanding answers. "What do you know about them, Grandmother? Who are the Blackwood Syndicate?"

"They were the silent financial backers who funded your grandfather's enemies thirty years ago, Julian," Grandmother rasped, breathing heavily as if the very mention of the name was suffocating her. "They didn't just want our corporate assets... they wanted complete control of the Sterling bloodline."

The Swiss director’s voice continued smoothly through the speaker, adding an even more terrifying layer to the unfolding conspiracy.

"Mr. Sterling, the Blackwood Syndicate has just initiated a full-scale digital transfer to reactivate those offshore holdings, and the authorization code required to complete the transaction can only be unlocked by using the biological DNA signature of the surviving Sterling heirs," the director warned gravely.

Julian stared down at the silver medallion resting on the table beside the phone, finally understanding why Elena and Marcus had targeted the children with such relentless, murderous obsession.

The medallion wasn't just a family crest; it was a physical cryptographic key designed to unlock a multi-billion-dollar international empire hidden away in Swiss vaults.

"What do they want us to do?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble.

May you like

"They want you to bring the children to Geneva within forty-eight hours, Mr. Sterling, or the syndicate will execute their secondary contingency protocol," the director replied coldly before abruptly disconnecting the call.
