Chapter 9 - The Hospital Sub-Basement

The red warning lights flashed rhythmically across the dashboard, casting a bloody hue over the interior of the armored SUV. Julian slammed the vehicle into park, killing the engine and cutting the headlights in one fluid motion. The sudden silence in the subterranean parking garage was absolute, save for the dripping of stagnant water somewhere in the far corner.
"Stay down," Julian whispered, drawing a sleek, matte-black sidearm from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. The metal clicked softly as he racked a round into the chamber.
Clara pressed herself flat against the passenger seat, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. Through the windshield, she watched the shadows near the concrete stairwell shift. Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the floor—not the hurried run of guards, but the steady, tactical advance of professionals.
"Vance," a distorted voice crackled through a portable megaphone near the entrance. "Surrender the girl and the memory card. Your corporate empire is already dismantled. You cannot outrun a federal directive."
Julian didn't answer. He carefully unlatched his door, pushing it open just a fraction of an inch to listen to their positioning. Two operatives on the left, one covering the rear exit ramp. Classic pinch maneuver.
"Julian, look!" Clara pointed frantically toward the security monitor on the dashboard. The camera feed from the hospital’s main ICU floor showed an empty room. Room 412—her mother’s room—was completely stripped of its medical equipment. The bed was made, the monitors were gone, and a single, blood-stained lab coat lay crumpled in the center of the pristine white sheets.
"They moved her," Julian murmured, his eyes narrowing with cold fury. "They knew we were coming down the transit line. This whole place is a ghost ship."
Before Julian could formulate a new counter-strategy, the passenger-side window exploded inward in a shower of reinforced glass shards. A heavy combat boot slammed against the door frame, wrenching it open before Julian could pivot his weapon.
A masked operative lunged into the vehicle, his hands reaching past Julian straight toward Clara, grabbing her by the collar of her soaked maid uniform and hauling her out of the seat with terrifying brute force.
"Clara!" Julian roared, lunging across the center console. He fired his sidearm twice, striking the operative’s tactical vest and sending the man crashing backward onto the concrete floor.
But as Clara stumbled away from the vehicle, gasping for air, a blinding searchlight clicked on overhead, illuminating the entire garage in stark, merciless white light. Standing at the top of the concrete stairs, flanked by four armed tactical guards, was Celeste. The gold sequined gown was gone, replaced by a ruthless military-grade tactical jumpsuit. In her hand, she held a remote detonator with a blinking green light.

"Nice try, Julian," Celeste smiled coldly, pressing the detonator against her thumb. "The hospital is wired with enough C4 to erase this entire block. Now, walk away, or the girl watches her mother burn."
