Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

"You’re hiding your face, why?" Julian Vance’s voice cut through the ambient jazz of the Obsidian Lounge like a blade of ice.
Clutching her black-and-white apron, Clara trembled under the heavy chandeliers. "My mom’s condition just spiked! I have to leave, I’寧 sorry."
"Look at me. Where is she right now?" Julian demanded, his grip tightening as he forced her chin upward.
"St. Jude’s County Hospital," she sobbed, tears cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "They’re cutting off her oxygen. I owe them four thousand dollars by midnight, or they unplug her."
Julian’s eyes narrowed, scanning her bruised knuckles—evidence of the abusive 16-hour shifts forced upon her by the management. In the background, four women in glittering evening gowns—red, green, gold, and sparkly—crossed their arms in unison, their faces contorted into masks of pure disdain.
"She’s just playing the sympathy card for tips, Julian," hissed Vivienne, the woman in the crimson gown, stepping forward. "Fire the little thief and let’s get back to our champagne."
"Shut your mouth, Vivienne," Julian said coldly, not breaking eye contact with the weeping girl. He pulled out his sleek smartphone, his thumb swiping across the screen with lethal precision. "Walk away from this job. My medical detail is already dispatched."
Clara gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the stranger before her was none other than Julian Vance, the ruthless venture capitalist who owned half the city. But before she could process the sheer magnitude of his promise, Julian’s phone buzzed violently in his palm. He glanced down at the screen, and the color instantly drained from his rugged, bearded face. The caller ID flashed a private number belonging to St. Jude’s ICU. He pressed accept, his heart sinking as a breathless nurse delivered news that changed everything.

"Mr. Vance," the nurse whispered frantically over the line. "Your mother’s room was just targeted. Clara’s mother isn’t the only one code-blue right now."
