Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Leverage

The blinking green light on Celeste’s remote detonator pulsed like a mechanical heartbeat in the stark white glare of the searchlights. The four tactical guards kept their assault rifles leveled squarely at Julian’s chest, their fingers resting lightly on the triggers.
Julian slowly lowered his sidearm, letting it slip from his fingers onto the concrete floor with a heavy metallic clatter. He raised his hands to shoulder height, his dark eyes locked onto Celeste with an intensity that made the cold-hearted executive unconsciously step back a half-inch.
"You’re playing a losing hand, Celeste," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly steady. "The federal indictment isn't just about corporate fraud anymore. The moment you detonated explosives in a civilian hospital zone, your immunity status dissolved. You’re a domestic terrorist now."
Celeste let out a sharp, brittle laugh, the sound echoing off the concrete walls. "Terrorist? History is written by the victors, Julian. Once we recover the encryption key from this little peasant girl and wipe the main servers, Vance-Pharma will absorb your entire portfolio. No one will ever know what happened down here."
She turned her gaze to Clara, who was trembling violently against the cold concrete pillar where the operatives had thrown her. Celeste stepped forward, her combat boots clicking sharply against the floor, and grabbed Clara roughly by her dark hair, forcing her head back.
"Where is the master key, girl?" Celeste hissed, pressing the barrel of a concealed blade against Clara’s throat. "Your mother gave it to you before she faked her death. Hand it over, and I might let you both die quickly."
Clara choked back a sob, tears blurring her vision as the cold steel pressed against her skin. She looked past Celeste, locking eyes with Julian. In that fraction of a second, a silent communication passed between them—an unspoken understanding born from shared desperation and unwavering resolve. Clara didn't have a master key. She didn't even know what a biometric encryption key looked like. But she realized right then that the true key wasn't a physical object on her person; it was hidden deep within her own memories of the hidden clinic where her mother had raised her in total isolation.
"I... I know where she hid the mainframe," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with defiance.
Celeste’s eyes narrowed with greedy suspicion. "Stop playing games. Tell me now, or I swear to God—"
"It’s in the abandoned vault beneath the old Obsidian lounge," Clara lied smoothly, her chin lifting with sudden, fierce courage. "The original server room. My mother backed up the entire Vance-Pharma trial database on an offline analog drive before the fire three years ago."
Celeste hesitated, her thumb hovering over the detonator as her mind raced to calculate the strategic value of an offline analog drive. It was the exact vulnerability the board had been searching for.

Julian used that microscopic hesitation. With explosive speed, he lunged sideways, sweeping the legs of the nearest tactical guard and ripping the assault rifle from his grip in a single, fluid motion.
