Chapter 2 - Shadows in the ICU

Julian stared at his glowing smartphone screen, his dark eyes darkening further with sudden fury. The background noise of the upscale hotel lounge seemed to dissolve, replaced by the pounding of his own pulse. He had come here tonight to finalize a multi-million-dollar acquisition, not to be dragged into a conspiracy involving the city’s most vulnerable citizens.
"Clarissa," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he gripped the trembling waitress by her thin shoulders. "Listen to me very carefully. Who else was in your mother’s hospital room today?"
Clara blinked rapidly through her tears, totally bewildered by the sudden shift in tone. "N-no one! Just me and the primary nurse. Why are you asking me this? Please, we have to go! If my mother dies—"
"She isn't dying," Julian interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. He turned his head slightly, locking a piercing stare onto the four elegant women standing twenty feet away. Vivienne and her companions were whispering frantically among themselves, clutching their miniature designer clutches like shields. The woman in the gold gown—Celeste—was aggressively tapping away on her own mobile device, her face flushed with sudden panic. Julian’s instincts, honed by years of corporate warfare, screamed that this wasn't a coincidence. The timing of Clara’s mother’s sudden medical crisis aligned too perfectly with Celeste’s arrival at the hotel.
"Julian, darling, you’re making a scene," Vivienne purred, closing the distance between them with slow, predatory steps. "Let the little maid deal with her own trash. We have reservations at Le Petit Chou."
"Stay back, Vivienne," Julian warned, raising a single hand without looking away from Clara. He tapped the speakerphone icon on his device. "Nurse Reynolds, repeat what you just told me about the ICU."
"Sir, someone overrode the ventilator controls in Room 412," the nurse’s voice trembled through the tiny speaker. "And... and it wasn't just your mother’s floor. Room 410, belonging to a charity patient named Martha Evans, experienced a simultaneous system purge. Both monitors flatlined at the exact same second."
Clara let out a blood-curdling scream, collapsing hard onto the polished marble floor. "No! Mom!"

Julian dropped to one knee, pulling Clara firmly against his chest. But as he looked up, he saw Celeste slipping a small, encrypted flash drive into her sequined evening bag, her eyes locked on Clara with pure, unadulterated venom.
