Chapter 11 - The Vault of Secrets

The heavy assault rifle bucked hard against Julian’s shoulder as he fired a controlled burst into the overhead lighting grid, plunging the subterranean garage back into deep, flickering shadow. Shouts of panic erupted from the tactical guards as bullets ricocheted off concrete pillars in a blinding display of sparks.
"Run, Clara!" Julian roared, firing another suppression burst toward the stairwell before grabbing her hand and dragging her toward the deeper recesses of the transit tunnel.
Bullets chewed into the concrete wall inches from their heads as Celeste screamed orders from the darkness. "Shoot them! Don't let them reach the rail line!"
Julian pushed Clara ahead of him into a rusted maintenance hatch hidden behind an old subway ventilation shaft. He slammed the heavy steel hatch shut behind them, throwing the manual deadbolt just as a barrage of heavy-caliber rounds hammered against the exterior metal, denting it inward with terrifying force.
They tumbled down a steep, narrow service stairwell into a subterranean chamber that smelled heavily of ozone, aged paper, and copper. The emergency lights here were dead, plunging them into near-total darkness save for the faint, pulsing blue glow emanating from a massive steel vault door set into the back wall.
Clara collapsed against the cold stone floor, gasping for air as adrenaline finally began to drain from her system, leaving her limbs trembling and weak. "Julian... my leg... I think I scraped it when they threw me."
Julian knelt beside her immediately, ignoring the distant sound of the guards trying to force the maintenance hatch above. He ripped a strip of fabric from the hem of her ruined maid uniform, wrapping it tightly around a deep gash on her shin with practiced efficiency.
"You lied to Celeste back there," Julian said softly, his dark eyes reflecting the faint blue light of the vault. "There’s no analog drive in the old lounge. The original mainframe was dismantled years ago."
Clara looked up at him, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. "I had to buy us time. But... I didn't entirely lie. My mother did keep a journal. She hid it inside the old ventilation shaft of our apartment before we had to run."
Julian’s expression shifted, a rare look of profound realization crossing his rugged face. "A physical journal. Handwritten logs of the illegal trials. That’s why Celeste and the board have been hunting your family across state lines for three years. It’s not just about corporate shares—it’s the definitive proof that Vance-Pharma deliberately infected clinical trial subjects."
Clara reached into the pocket of her apron, pulling out a small, metallic object she had instinctively swiped from the desk in Clara’s hospital room during the chaos. It wasn't a flash drive. It was an old-fashioned silver locket, tarnished with age. She popped the small clasp open with her fingernail. Inside wasn't a photograph, but a micro-film chip folded into a microscopic square.
"She gave this to me right before they took her," Clara whispered, tears welling in her eyes again. "She said if anything ever happened to her, I had to give it to the only man in the city incorruptible enough to use it."

Julian stared at the tiny micro-film chip in her palm. The blue light from the vault door suddenly turned solid green, accompanied by a low, mechanical hiss. The massive steel vault door slowly swung outward on its hinges, revealing a room bathed in blinding white light—and standing right inside the doorway, flanked by Vivienne and Beatrice, was a man Julian thought he would never see again.
