Chapter 8 - The Underground Transit

The headlights of the armored SUV cut a harsh, yellow path through the abandoned subway tunnel. The air down here was stagnant, smelling of rusted iron, damp earth, and decades of forgotten city history. Chunks of concrete and twisted railway ties littered the tracks, forcing Julian to navigate the vehicle with precise, aggressive control. The heavy suspension groaned as the tires bounced over ancient rails, the chassis scraping against low-hanging conduits.
Clara gripped the passenger grab handle so tightly her knuckles turned ghostly white. She stared out the window into the pitch-black tunnels, where ancient graffiti glowed faintly under the reflection of their high beams.
"Julian," Clara broke the tense silence, her voice small against the rumble of the engine. "You said my mother is a whistleblower. You said they faked her death three years ago. If they wanted her dead then, why keep her alive in St. Jude’s ICU until today?"
Julian kept his eyes locked on the dark tracks ahead, his jaw tight. "Because of a biometric encryption key. Vance-Pharma’s ultimate offshore bank accounts and research logs are locked behind a genetic signature. Your mother’s DNA was the only master key capable of unlocking the financial assets required to fund their next phase of human trials."
Clara gasped, turning fully toward him. "Her DNA? But... but I’m her daughter. Does that mean—"
"Yes," Julian interrupted, his voice heavy with grim reality. "Your DNA is a secondary match. That’s why you were placed under surveillance at the hotel lounge. They didn't just want to fire you, Clara. They were setting you up to be brought into their private clinic under the guise of an emergency hospital transfer."
Clara felt the blood drain from her face. The upscale hotel, the abusive management, the elegant women in evening gowns—it wasn't a series of unfortunate events. It was a meticulously engineered human trap designed to capture her.
"And my mother?" Clara’s voice cracked, tears spilling over her eyelashes again. "Is she really in St. Jude’s right now, or was that call a trick too?"
"The call was real," Julian said, slowing the SUV to a cautious halt in front of a heavy iron maintenance gate bearing the city transit authority seal. "The threat to her life is real. That’s why we’re breaking into the sub-basement beneath the hospital."
Julian pulled a heavy tactical multi-tool from the center console, hopped out into the damp chill of the tunnel, and approached the iron gate. Sparks flew as he bridged the electronic keypad with a direct electrical current, overriding the manual deadbolts with a sharp electrical snap. The heavy gate groaned open, revealing a steep concrete staircase leading directly upward into the darkness.
Julian climbed back into the driver’s seat, revving the engine to push through the gate. But as the SUV crossed the threshold into the hospital’s sub-basement, the dashboard display suddenly flashed a blinding red warning alert.
