Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Labyrinth

The air in the hotel’s sub-basement was thick with the smell of industrial steam and bleach. Pipes hissed overhead like coiled serpents as Julian and Clara sprinted down the damp concrete corridors. The emergency red glow-strips cast long, distorted shadows against the concrete walls, making every turn look like a trap.
"Where... where are we going?" Clara gasped, clutching her side as a sharp stitch flared in her ribs. She was still wearing the flimsy black-and-white maid uniform, her black slip-on shoes slapping loudly against the wet floor.
"The loading dock," Julian said over his shoulder, not slowing his pace. He kept one hand firmly locked around her wrist, guiding her through a maze of laundry carts and stacked supply crates. "My private transport is parked in Bay 4. It’s a hardened vehicle. They won’t be able to track our signal once we’re inside."
"Why are they doing this, Julian?" Clara cried out, tears welling in her eyes again, though this time from sheer exhaustion and confusion. "Why would wealthy socialites care about my mother? Who are those women?"
Julian stopped abruptly beside a heavy steel fire door, pulling Clara into the deep shadow of an industrial ventilation unit. He pressed a finger to his lips, signaling absolute silence. Above them, the heavy thud of heavy boots echoed down the concrete stairwell—not coming from behind, but cutting off their path ahead.
"Vivienne isn't just a socialite," Julian whispered fiercely, leaning close so his breath brushed her ear. "She’s the primary shareholder of the board that funded the illegal trials your mother exposed. Celeste is their legal cleaner. They thought your mother died in a lab fire three years ago. When she survived in hiding under a witness protection alias, they realized you were the key to finding her."
Clara’s breath hitched. "My... my whole life has been a lie? My mother raised me in secret in a run-down apartment because..."
"Because they were hunting you both," Julian finished grimly. He slowly eased the heavy steel door open an inch, peering out into the loading dock.
Bay 4 was empty. But parked right in the center of the bay was Julian’s matte-black armored SUV. And leaning casually against the driver’s door, smoking an imported cigarette, was the fourth woman from the lounge—the one in the emerald-green gown. She didn't look like a helpless socialite anymore; she held a suppressed tactical pistol resting casually against her thigh.

"Going somewhere, boys and girls?" the woman called out into the echoing cavern, her voice dripping with venom as she slowly raised the barrel toward the shadows where Julian and Clara hid.
