Chapter 4 - Darkness in the Obsidian Lounge

A collective gasp echoed through the high-ceilinged room as the crystal chandeliers died, plunging the upscale lounge into an eerie, amber-lit twilight powered by emergency backups. In the sudden chaos, the sharp sound of running heels echoed against the marble floor.

"Clara, stay behind me," Julian commanded, his hand darting out to grab the young woman’s wrist before she could panic. He pulled her tight against his side, his eyes scanning the gloom. The four women in evening gowns had vanished from their spot by the pillar.

"They're heading for the service elevator!" Clara cried out, her vision adjusting to the dim emergency lights. Through the glass partition separating the lounge from the hotel's back corridors, she spotted the unmistakable shimmer of Celeste’s gold sequined gown darting toward the restricted staff zone. "Julian, my phone—you dropped your phone during the blackout!"

Julian looked down. In the rush, his smartphone had slipped from his pocket, skittering across the floor into the shadows near the leather armchairs. He crouched down to retrieve it, but as his fingers brushed the smooth glass screen, a heavy boot slammed down onto the device, shattering it into a spiderweb of useless fragments.

Julian looked up slowly. Standing over him was one of the hotel security guards who had answered Celeste’s call earlier. The man’s expression was completely blank, devoid of any professional courtesy.

"Mr. Vance," the guard said, his voice flat and robotic. "Management requests that you cease your investigation immediately. Step away from the girl."

Julian didn't hesitate. Instead of retreating, he exploded upward with terrifying speed, driving a vicious right hook straight into the guard’s jaw. The man collapsed instantly, unconscious before he even hit the floor. Julian snatched his ruined phone from the carpet, scanning the flickering display. Miraculously, the internal memory card was intact. He ripped it out with his bare thumbnail, slipping the tiny square of plastic into his pocket.

"Can you run, Clara?" Julian asked, his breathing slightly elevated, his restraint finally giving way to a dangerous edge.

Clara wiped her face with the back of her blood-stained apron, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce resolve. For the first time since the night began, the trembling fear vanished, replaced by the desperate fury of a daughter whose mother’s life was on the line. "Try and keep up," she whispered.

They bolted through the service door, plunging into the dark labyrinth of the hotel's subterranean levels, unaware that a sniper was already tracking their heat signatures from the floor above.
