Chapter 15 - Dawn Over the Horizon

The deafening chop of twin-rotor helicopter blades vibrated through the chassis of the armored SUV as the two unmarked aircraft descended aggressively, matching the vehicle’s high-speed trajectory along the coastal highway. High-intensity searchlights washed over the windshield, blinding Julian with a blinding glare of harsh white light.
"Hold on!" Julian roared, spinning the steering wheel hard to the left as a burst of heavy-caliber magnetic EMP rounds struck the highway pavement just inches from their tires, sending a cascade of white-hot sparks flying into the night.
"They're going to force us off the cliff!" Clara screamed, clutching the dashboard as the SUV skidded dangerously close to the concrete highway barrier, beyond which lay the dark, churning waters of the ocean far below.
Julian didn't hesitate. Instead of braking, he slammed his foot down hard on the accelerator, pushing the modified engine past its normal limits. The SUV surged forward, pulling ahead of the helicopters' direct firing arc just as they approached a jagged mountain tunnel carved directly into the coastal rock face.
"Duck!" Julian yelled.
The SUV plunged into the pitch-black mountain tunnel at over a hundred miles per hour. The heavy concrete walls of the tunnel completely blocked the helicopters' electronic tracking signals and weapon locks. The sudden silence inside the cabin was deafening, broken only by the heavy breathing of the engine and their own racing heartbeats.
After what felt like an eternity, the headlights broke out of the far end of the tunnel, illuminating the wide-open gates of Julian’s private coastal estate. Parked directly on the illuminated tarmac of the private airstrip was a sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream jet, its boarding stairs already lowered and waiting.
And standing at the base of the stairs, wrapped in a warm medical blanket and supported by two of Julian’s private physicians, was Clara’s mother.
"Mom!" Clara sobbed uncontrollably, throwing her door open before the SUV had even come to a complete stop. She scrambled out onto the tarmac, running as fast as her exhausted legs could carry her straight into her mother’s trembling arms.

Julian stepped out of the driver’s seat, watching the reunion with a quiet, exhausted smile on his rugged face. He pulled his ruined smartphone and the tiny micro-film chip from his pocket, tossing them both into the roaring jet engine’s intake turbine before walking up the stairs.
As the Gulfstream taxied down the runway and lifted off into the first golden rays of dawn breaking over the Pacific horizon, Julian wrapped a warm wool blanket around Clara’s shoulders. The nightmare of the Obsidian Lounge was finally over, and a new life awaited them both beyond the sunrise.
