Chapter 7 - The Armor-Plated Escape

The deafening roar of the overhead fire suppression system masked the sound of the approaching operatives, but the glaring sweep of tactical flashlight beams cut through the torrential spray. Julian slammed Clara into the passenger seat of the matte-black SUV, hauling the heavy steel door shut and locking the master override with a violent slap of his palm.
"Buckle up!" Julian shouted, sliding behind the reinforced steering wheel.
The engine roared to life with a deep, guttural growl, shaking the chassis of the heavily modified vehicle. Outside, the second wave of armed men spilled into Bay 4, their flashlights fixing on the SUV. Without a second of hesitation, Julian slammed the transmission into reverse, tearing rubber across the slick concrete floor.
"They're shooting!" Clara screamed, ducking below the dashboard as a volley of heavy-caliber rounds slammed harmlessly against the thick, bulletproof composite glass, leaving star-shaped fractures across the passenger window.
Julian spun the steering wheel hard, executing a high-speed J-turn that sent the SUV spinning around in a wide arc of smoking rubber and water spray. He slammed the accelerator forward, aiming the heavy steel bumper directly at the loading dock’s massive security rolling gate.
"Hold on!" Julian roared.
The SUV smashed through the reinforced steel gate with a thunderous crunch of twisted metal and shattered glass, bursting out from the subterranean bowels of the hotel and onto the rain-slicked downtown streets. The cool night air rushed into the cabin as they accelerated into the midnight traffic, weaving aggressively between panicked civilian sedans and towering city buses.
Clara slowly sat up, her chest heaving as she stared out the rear window at the receding silhouette of the upscale hotel. Her maid uniform was soaked through from the fire suppression deluge, and her hands were shaking uncontrollably.
"We... we actually made it out," she breathed, her voice trembling.
"We’re not safe yet," Julian said, his eyes darting between the rearview mirrors and the glowing GPS dashboard console. His fingers flew across the vehicle’s encrypted tactical interface, pulling up a real-time satellite feed of the city. "They have local law enforcement on Vance-Pharma’s payroll. Every patrol car within a ten-mile radius is going to be looking for this vehicle plates."
"Then where are we going?" Clara asked, turning to face him. The dashboard lights cast sharp shadows across his rugged features, highlighting the hard line of his jaw and the fierce intensity in his dark eyes.
Julian didn't answer immediately. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the tiny micro-memory card he had salvaged from his destroyed smartphone. He slid it into the SUV’s dashboard port. A data stream flickered across the main screen, revealing an encrypted blue-print file labeled Project Lazarus.
"We’re going to the one place they don’t control," Julian said coldly, tapping a hidden location on the map. "An abandoned subway terminal beneath St. Jude’s Hospital. That’s where your mother’s real medical file is hidden."

He turned the steering wheel sharply, diving the SUV down a descending ramp into a dark underground transit tunnel, completely unaware that a black unmarked drone was silently tracking their exact coordinates from the stormy clouds above.
