Chapter 3 - The Encrypted Trap

The cold marble floor pressed hard against Julian’s knees as he held Clara. The weeping waitress clutched his tailored black suit jacket, her tears soaking through the expensive wool. Around them, the high-society guests in the Obsidian Lounge pretended not to watch, sipping their martinis with exaggerated nonchalance, though their eyes darted sideways. Only the four women in evening gowns remained stationary, acting as a human wall blocking the main exit.

"Celeste," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stood up, lifting Clara effortlessly with him. "Hand over the phone."

Celeste scoffed, tossing her meticulously styled blonde hair over her bare shoulder. "Are you out of your mind, Julian? You’re acting deranged over some greasy maid and her dying relative. Security!" she barked, snapping her fingers toward the lounge entrance. Two hulking men in identical black tuxedos and earpieces materialized from the shadows, stepping directly into Julian’s path.

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly slid his smartphone back into his breast pocket, his fingers brushing against a heavy titanium key ring. "You think buying off hotel security makes you untouchable, Celeste? You just authorized a remote override on a hospital server using the Obsidian Lounge’s private mesh network. My corporate firewall captured your device’s MAC address the second you logged on."

Vivienne stepped forward, her green gown rustling like dry leaves. "You can’t prove anything, Julian. You’re throwing your life away for a nobody. Drop this, and we forget you ever lost your mind here tonight."

"My life?" Julian let out a short, humorless laugh. "I built this hotel. I built the medical foundation funding St. Jude’s. And someone in this room is trying to wipe out the only living witnesses to a multi-million-dollar pharmaceutical trial fraud." He turned his gaze back to Clara, who was staring up at him in absolute shock, her lips parted. "Your mother wasn't just a charity patient, Clara. She was the head nurse who blew the whistle on Vance-Pharma’s experimental drug trials three years ago. They faked her death to silence her. Until today."

Clara stumbled backward, the room spinning around her. "That’s... that’s a lie. My mom said she worked in administration!"

"She lied to protect you," Julian said softly. He reached out to steady her, but before his fingers could touch her arm, the hotel’s master lighting system violently flickered and plunged the entire lounge into pitch blackness.
