Chapter 7: The Paper Trail

The captured operative did not stay silent for long under federal interrogation. By sunrise, FBI agents and NYPD detectives were swarming Vance Capital’s accounting department.
In her private office, Eleanor sat beside Special Agent Miller.
"The assassin was wired fifty thousand dollars from an offshore shell corporation in the Cayman Islands," Miller explained, flipping through banking manifests. "The account traces back to a foundation called 'The Phoenix Trust'."
"Julian’s private slush fund," Eleanor said, her voice like steel.
"We have enough for a grand jury indictment, Eleanor, but Julian caught wind of the arrest," Miller warned. "He cleared out his penthouse an hour ago. His private jet has filed a flight plan for Zurich departing Teterboro Airport at noon."
Eleanor looked at the clock. It was 10:30 AM.
"He won't make that flight," Eleanor said, standing up. "Arthur, scramble the helicopter. We're going to Teterboro."
"Mom?"
Eleanor turned to see Alex standing in the doorway, dressed in a warm navy sweater, clutching his locket. "Don't let him hurt anyone else."

Eleanor walked over, kissed his cheek, and smiled with unwavering resolve. "No one will ever hurt us again, Alex."
