Chapter 2: Echoes in the Penthouse

The penthouse overlooking Central Park had been a mausoleum for seven years. When Eleanor walked through the foyer carrying Alex, the staff froze in utter disbelief. Housekeeper Maria dropped her silver tray, the crash echoing across the marble floor.

"Is... is that Master Alex?" Maria choked out, covering her mouth.

"Draw a warm bath, Maria," Eleanor commanded, her voice fierce with maternal urgency. "Call Dr. Harrison immediately. Not a word to the press. Not a word to the board."

Alex stared at the towering crystal chandelier with wide, terrified eyes. He gripped the hem of Eleanor’s coat like a lifeline. "Am I going to jail, lady? I didn’t steal the bread yesterday, I swear."

Tears pricked Eleanor’s eyes, but she swallowed them down. She knelt before him, smoothing back his matted brown hair. "You are in your home, Alex. You never have to beg, run, or be afraid ever again."

Dr. Harrison arrived forty minutes later. A routine finger-prick DNA test was processed on a rush stat order. Eleanor sat by the boy’s bedside as he devoured a bowl of chicken broth, falling asleep mid-bite with his tiny fist clutching the silver heart locket.

At midnight, Harrison’s tablet chimed.

"99.98% maternal match, Eleanor," the doctor whispered in awe. "It’s him. But Eleanor... the scar on his shoulder. It’s a surgical extraction mark. Someone removed a tracking chip years ago."
