Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Shattered Expectations

"No. You are not moving into my house."
The words dropped into the quiet space of the living room like a heavy stone hitting dry earth. Eleanor stood firmly behind the scarred mahogany chair, her fingers resting lightly on its polished back. Her posture was rigidly straight, her short gray hair framing a face carved from decades of endurance. Beneath her light blue button-down shirt and beige cardigan, her heart hammered against her ribs, but her outward composure remained absolute. She refused to blink, keeping her gaze locked on the two intruders who had already crossed her threshold as if they owned the deed.
Elena’s face twisted instantly, the long auburn hair whipping back as she stepped forward with a jolt of pure disbelief. Her beige blazer tightened over her black top as her chest heaved with sudden, hot fury. "What did you just say?" Her voice cracked with the sharp edge of absolute entitlement, echoing off the bare walls of the house she had already mentally divided into rooms for herself, her husband, and their accumulation of excess baggage.
"I said no," Eleanor replied. Her voice did not waver. It was calm, measured, and terrifyingly final.
Beside Elena, Marcus shifted his weight, his dark hair falling across his forehead as he adjusted his light jacket over his white shirt. His eyes bulged with sudden, arterial rage. Together, the couple lunged forward, their hands gripping the black suitcase that sat heavily on the Persian rug between them, as if the sheer act of holding their luggage could force Eleanor to surrender. Their faces contorted into masks of pure malice, the venom spilling past their lips in a synchronized roar of pure loathing.
"I hate you!" Elena and Marcus screamed in unison, their voices scraping the raw edges of civility and tearing open decades of suppressed resentment.
Marcus pointed a shaking, aggressive finger straight into Eleanor’s face, his spit flying across the short distance as his voice dropped into a dark, guttural command.
"Turn!"

The single word hung in the air, dripping with venom and command, demanding that Eleanor turn around and face the reality they intended to impose upon her. Yet Eleanor did not flinch. She simply stared past them, her eyes locking onto something far more dangerous than the angry couple in her living room. Through the heavy glass of the front window, a black sedan idled by the curb, and stepping out of the passenger side was a figure Eleanor had not seen in twenty years—a face she thought was buried beneath six feet of cold earth.
