Chapter 4 - Federal Paperwork and Family Fraud

The red stamp of the Department of Justice seemed to burn against the dark grain of the mahogany coffee table. Marcus lunged forward, snatching the papers before Elena could touch them. His eyes scanned the lines of legal jargon, his breathing turning shallow and ragged as the color drained entirely from his face.
"This... this is a mistake," Marcus stammered, his fingers shaking so violently that the single-page federal injunction fluttered like a dry leaf. "My firm’s forensic accounting was audited last year. Everything was cleared by the compliance board. You can't just slap a federal lien on a residential property based on anonymous allegations!"
Arthur pulled off his trench coat, dropping it unceremoniously onto the mahogany chair Eleanor had just vacated, and walked toward the small dry bar in the corner of the room. Without asking, he poured himself two fingers of neat bourbon from a crystal decanter that had sat untouched since their father’s death. "Your firm didn't just audit accounts, Marcus. You skimmed three point two million dollars from the municipal pension fund over a six-year period, using shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under names borrowed from old probate files."
Elena whirled around to face her husband, her eyes blazing with sudden, terrifying realization. "Marcus? What is he talking about? You said those overseas accounts were legitimate venture capital funds! You told me our lifestyle was funded by tech startups!"
"It was a hedge fund, Elena! It was completely legal under Section 42 of the tax code!" Marcus shouted back, though his voice lacked any real conviction. He looked back down at the federal document, his eyes locking onto the signature at the bottom of the page—the signature of the federal prosecutor overseeing the case. It wasn't a stranger's name. It was Eleanor’s maiden name, used as a legal alias for the confidential informant who had blown the whistle nine months ago.
Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Eleanor, who stood calmly by the window, watching the rain begin to streak the glass. "You... you did this. You set us up."
"I didn't set you up, Marcus," Eleanor said softly, turning away from the window to face the three of them. Her voice carried the chilling weight of a judge passing sentence. "You built a house of cards out of other people's life savings, and you assumed that because I was old, living alone in this drafty house, I wouldn't notice the tax liens being attached to my property taxes three years ago. You used my address as the secondary contact for your offshore LLCs without my permission. The moment the IRS flagged the discrepancies, the automated federal notifications came straight to my mailbox."
Arthur took a slow sip of his bourbon, leaning against the dry bar. "And when Mother called me in hiding to tell me her identity was being used in a federal wire fraud investigation, I decided it was time to crawl out from under the rocks and help her clean house. Literally."
Elena let out a low, animalistic wail, sinking down onto the edge of the sofa and burying her face in her hands. All the arrogance, all the haughty demands to take over the master bedroom, evaporated into the damp air of the living room. "We have nowhere to go," she sobbed, her shoulders shaking with genuine, uncontrollable panic. "If the federal lien goes through, our bank accounts are frozen by midnight. We’ll be arrested before the week is out."
"Then I suggest you pack that black suitcase and start walking toward the bus station," Eleanor said, stepping forward and placing her hand flat on the top of the mahogany chair. "Because the federal marshals are scheduled to arrive here at dawn to execute the asset seizure warrant. And unlike you, they won't even let you take your luggage."
May you like
Before Marcus could scream another curse or lunge across the room, the heavy brass door knocker pounded three times, vibrating through the floorboards and signaling that the first wave of visitors had already arrived ahead of schedule.
